Paul Schaal Ex Angel and Royal passes away at 74

https://www.facebook.com/joseph.vent...07818532819810 Schaal was called up from Omaha by the Royals 40 years ago this week to sub for an injured Schaal, an original Royal selected from the California Angels in the 1969 expansion draft who once held the club record for consecutive games played.

“Until Hal McRae illegally broke it because he was the (designated hitter). There should be an asterisk there,” Schaal said, laughing and adding, “But I was not a threat to (Lou) Gehrig at that time.”

Instead, he more evokes a modern Wally Pipp, the New York Yankees first baseman whom legend — but not strict fact — has it sat out one day because of a headache, allowing Gehrig in the New York Yankees’ lineup for the first of 2,129 more games in a row. (The “Iron Horse’s” streak of 2,130 games actually commenced the day before with a pinch-hitting appearance).

Brett would be sent back down in the summer of 1973 when Schaal recovered (for the moment) from an ankle injury that would later require surgery, and by the next May, Schaal was traded to the Angels to make way for Brett.

“I use it to my benefit now: I tell everybody it took a Hall of Famer to take my job from me,” said Schaal, speaking from his home in Hawaii, where he continues to do healing and energy work seemingly reflected in his soothing voice.

It’s perhaps easy for Schaal to have a sense of humor about it now, but by all indications he was gracious to Brett even as the displacement was underway.

Cloyd Boyer is now 90

Are there any photos out there of Cloyd Boyer?. He turned 90 this past week on September 1 and according to Wikipedia he is the 76th currently living ex-major league player to reach that age. (MLB career: 1949-1952 St.Louis Cardinals and 1955 Kansas city Athletics). RHP - was 20-23 lifetime, with 13 Complete Games and 3 Shut Outs in 112 MLB games and 48 Games Started. Brother of Ken Boyer and Clete Boyer.

There doesn't seem to be any shortage although, for a good color image from his playing days, the 1953 Bowman Color set might give you the best we have so far. But all these images and many more turn up in either a straight Google search or an eBay photo search (I have greyscaled the B&Ws). First is a shot of Clete & Cloyd with the A's from a Mears Auction. Then Cloyd with the Houston Buffaloes, Cloyd on a Rodeo Meats card, Cloyd with the Cards, and Cloyd as a Yankees coach.

Note: I see the copy on the Buffaloes image relates to Ken, not Cloyd, but the image was being sold as Cloyd and looks like Cloyd (and Cloyd was certainly with Houston in '53 while Ken wasn't until '54). I'm pretty sure it's Cloyd. The back of the photo contained no player ID whatsoever. I've got at least one more of Cloyd with Houston and Cloyd with Indianapolis, if you'd prefer.

Gene Stick Michael Passes away at 79

During Michael's tenure as GM, he rebuilt the farm system, adding the likes of Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada either in the draft or free agency. He also traded Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill. That core group helped the Bombers to championships in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. For this alone he should have a plaque in Monument park

Gene 'Stick' Michael also played for the Dodgers & Tigers, if any one has photos they'd like to share of him in those uniforms.

As I've previously told ort, the 2nd '57 is Bill Koski, not Harding Peterson.
