Post Text to speech- OOTP announcer?

I play Everquest (online fantasy game) some and I found a utility that uses Microsoft Speech (free) to process the text messages in to speech. The utility uses a game generated log file to translate the text to speech. It really works well and adds a lot to the game. This may not be possible with the current setup of ootp4 but I thought I'd see if anyone knew for sure.

Anyway...it could be fun to have the text translated even if its a computer voice announcing.

I like this idea as a replacement for the scrolling PBP text in managed games...although it would definitely be more fun to have a "real" radio-type broadcaster announcing the game. I would pay the extra $ next year if Markus could somehow implement this in OOTP5!

Hopefully we will someday see this (or hear) this feature in OOTP. Years ago APBA had a PC baseball game called "Broadcast Blast" or something like that. It was on a CD and included audio play by play from long time Tigers' announcer Ernie Harwell. It was great fun to hear the plays done by a real baseball radio announcer. The game overlayed his voice with sounds of the crack of the bat and noises from the crowd, peanut vendors etc.

While this isn't the 1st improvement I would ask for in OOTP, it would be a great addition someday.

The repetitive nature will become more obvious with voice. You may not realise it, but you automatically skim/skip over repetitve text. The voice is something you can't skim over.

It would definately need to be an on/off feature.

Thumbs down

*gack* no thanks, that would take a 20 minute sim and extend it out to 30-40 min. bad enough having to deal with 3-5 foul balls to find out what happened without having to wait for an *announcer*

definite on/off button material

It's a decent idea, but I never really cared for Stephen Hawking calling a ballgame.

I just think of the support sound card issues.... maybe sound in v6, I'm hoping almost all other forms of crashing can be eliminated before adding sound is even considered .

I agree that if it is ever done it should be done well and should be a feature the user could turn off.

If voice is ever done, the only way it would be "cool" and add value is if there are about 25 or so random voice phrases/words for each individual event.

Example: "foul ball" ... if there is just one or two different "foul ball" calls, the boring nature would cause EVERYONE to turn off the voice option... it woudl drive you batty to hear that repeated over and over. However, even a mundane "foul ball" call would have appeal and fun if it sounded like a new voice call practically every time (of course, the animation would have to match the voice call) ... e.g., "sharp grounder just foul near the first base bag", etc. It CAN be done but would require time to record and code/match video animation to each and every type of outcome, ... with about 25 or more different audio calls and each and every possible outcome of a pitch ... an immense undertaking that would add immense value, buzz and attractiveness to the game.
