When is the best time to make league changes?

I started a dynasty in the 1969 season, and I have just finished the 1976 season.

There were quite a few changes in the 1977 season, most notably the addition of the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays in the AL that year.

So - what would be the best time to make that change? In the off-season of 1976, or wait until the calendar rolls around to '77?

I think timing is all going to depend on what changes. For the expansion teams you should expand right when the playoffs end and it will schedule the expansion draft. I know this is the way fictional and modern day behave, I am not sure if in historical if it automatically expands.

definitely what orcin said, and a general rule:

before the effects of those proposed changes take place in the next cycle (start of offseason is similar to a 'reset button' in a way).

one thing.. how are rules with expansion team and Free Agency applied in the game? i've never expanded. so, it's rhetorical in nature, but i'd assume it's also important to have the expansion draft before FA begins? give plenty of time before FA begins? guaranteed there's a thread about this, even if from past releases should apply to ootp'18.

add "site:http://www.ootpdevelopments.com" to a google search, way better than any forum's search.

Yup, I always do that too. If you're wanting the league to expand as it did in the past, that's an option you just have to click and it'll do it for you. You can turn it off after that expansion if you don't want more. Once off though, it won't work again if you turn on.

Thanks. It's not just about MLB expansion, but reorganizing the minors as well.

When did FA start? I forget if it was 1976 or 1977. I always bring in new teams the 1st day of FA. Otherwise the 1st day of the offseason.

Why dont you want league evolution checked in a historical league? Unless you kept the Dodgers in Brooklyn or the Pilots in Seattle there is no reason to uncheck it in a historical league. Fictional, I finally have joined Bwburke's logic. if checked it will bring both teams in the 1st day of the offseason, to my knowledge.

Because I'm a bit "anal" when it comes to OOTP making changes. Sometimes it gets it right, sometimes not.

And...I link to "tinker" with things. Doing it manually gives me an idea of what teams moved where, and how leagues reorganized because of it.

First day of the offseason isn't necessarily bad, but I prefer the free agency filing date to prevent the expansion teams from doing something stupid.

If an actual realignment is involved as in 1998, always do it on free agency filing date.
