Demoted vs. Optioned?
What is the difference, and how do you do one over the other. When I review the All Transactions report, when I send a player down from my ML team to AAA, it says he was "demoted". However, when the AI controlled team does it, it says he was "optioned". Just looking for a little clarity...

Not 100% about this, but it could be that the player was already "optioned" earlier in the year. You only have to use 1 option per year, after which, the player may be promoted and demoted as many times as necessary without incurring another option until the following year. So for example, if a player on the 40 man roster fails to make the major league club out of Spring Training, then sending him to the minors expends an option. If the player is subsequently recalled from the minors later in the season, say due to injury, and then later sent back down, the second demotion does not expend an option.

Semantics. If a player is optioned, he is demoted. However, if he is demoted, it could be an outright assignment (occurs when removed from the 40-man).

Actually, the text does distinguish between an assignment, demotion, and being optioned. So, although they may all have the same end result (moving from the ML to the MiL), they must have independent criteria which triggers the wording, unless you are saying the devs are using the 3 terms interchangeably, without cause. But I don't think that is the case.

maybe it indicates a vet accepted the demotion?
very likely the semantics match up to a specific situation, like sreem said... some things are meant to be less clear, but in this particular case no reason for that. |
