Backgrounds
Thanks for the kind words. I did them this way because the original backgrounds were fairly bland and out of laziness I used other backgrounds my favorite is using old postcard backgrounds like the following. Note the photos are named when you save the file....but they are Milnar, Allie Clark, Al Papai, Bill Baker and Del Ennis

Upgrading a true rarity (plus others)
In asking for a strong upgrade for this image of Sam Jethroe, this is the only color image I have seen of him with a Milwaukee cap. He never played for the M-Braves, having been sent back to the minors for 1953 after a large dropoff in average with an increase in strikeouts in 1952. In December of '53, he was traded to the Pirates, for whom he played only two games in 1954 -- the end of his MLB career. Otherwise, he spent five seasons with Class AAA Toronto, becoming a legend for the Maple Leafs.
Also upgrading a few in the minor league thread! Sam Jethroe, Milwaukee(!) Colt 45s: Jim Busby at the very end of his career, Chuck Taylor at the very beginning This guy not a Topps regular; this would be awesome portrait if not for age... Ron Kline, Angels, in bad need of repair... Last edited by Rainmaker; 06-03-2017 at 11:24 PM. |

Jimmy Piersall has passed away may he rest in peace
Quite a character during his playing days and his broadcasting career. One spring in 89 I was in Mesa when Jimmy strolled into the Cubs facility. A fan yelled out "Jimmy whats the word of the day" and he yelled back "SUCK"
1964 topps was a photo posted to this site years ago and the others came from the Lexi files. https://twitter.com/search?q=Jimmy+P...Ctwgr%5Esearch |

Color corrections
Color corrections as requested: The two small photos were too small and unclear for good corrections

Could that Milwaukee player be Bill Bruton?

Agreed thats what I thought as well since Bruton number was 38 and Sam's number for Boston Braves was 5

To Ortforshort:
Section 407 on this page should be labeled Phillies 20, not Phillies 19, shouldn't it? |

Jimmy Piersall
Not to be a credit hog, but Mets Piersall with the bats in the dugout was one of my earliest colorizations (originally posted to Baseball Birthdays). Don't know that I've done anything that good since.
Rest in peace, Jimmy. Thanks for the memories. |

Question Re: Phillies 19 on Previous Page
Does anyone know when George Hodge was in the Phillies spring camp, or when his photo would otherwise have been shot in a Phillies uniform? He was in the Phils' minor league system from 1970 through 1972, but newspaper searches don't pick up any reports of his being with the major league team.

Jimmy Piersall's Impressive fielding Records.
Jimmy Piersall had some impressive fielding records which added to his overall value. While he never hit more than 19 home runs in a season (1957) and he hit .300 only once (1961) , his defensive abilities contributed to his overall high stature among the outfielders of his day (1952-1966, with cups of coffee in the majors in 1950 & 1967).
1953: Led A.L. Right Fielders in OF Put Outs 1955: 2nd among all A.L outfielders: 425 outfield putouts 1956: 457 outfield putouts - career high - led the A.L. 1957: 397 outfield putouts led the A.L 1962: Third year he led the A.L. in outfielder fielding percentage with a career high.997 fielding percentage. - (One error - all season). He also had two seasons with 15 Outfielder Assists and in a typical season had at least 10. Piersall was chosen to the A.L. all-star team in 1954 and 1956 (when he led the A.L. in doubles with 40 and had a career-high 87 RBI) , but he was not chosen as an all-star in 1961 when he had his only .300 season. He finished 3rd in the A.L. among batting title qualifiers that year with a .322 batting average. Last edited by dennis_keith; 06-05-2017 at 01:15 PM. |
