What baseball games did you play as a kid? - Page 4

I started playing StratoMatic First. My favorite one back hen was SherCo. It used a grid with different stadiums, which I loved. Playing old teams in League Park and Shibe park appealed to the Historian in me. Played Statis-Pro and made my own cards of old teams. PTP and then Diamond Mind was next. I joined an international sim league of PTP/DM and even hosted the annual draft for a few years. I still have friends from those days including two employees of ESPN. I've been playing Football Manager for 10 years and am waiting for OOTP18 to be released on Steam and I'm going to take the plunge.

Pre-computer days I played alot of SI's Superstar Baseball. Had stacks of filled out box score sheets.
In the computer age my first game was Microleague Baseball.
Then a little Earl Weaver Baseball.
Then Tony LaRussa II for several years.
Also played this IBM game, Pro League Baseball I think.
Dabbled in Hardball III for Sega and PC
High Heat 2002 and 2004 for PC
Then back to text simulations:
PureSim
Baseball Mogul
DiamondMind online
Digital Diamond Baseball

And now, for the first time OOTP 17. Now that they have a decent graphic 3D mode, I doubt I'll go back to any of the other games, OOTP blows them all out of the water. And they don't charge for individual seasons, which prevents me from even trying Action PC baseball or PC Replay baseball.

In the late 80s, early 90s it was play in the street with the neighborhood kids until the sun went down. When the sun went down it was Baseball Stars on NES until it was time for bed. That was my jam.

My first baseball game was Cadeco All-Star Baseball. I started playing with other family members and friends in 1961.

The first one I played was one I created. I used a deck of cards as my random generator. There were fictitious teams and players, which is my preference still to this day. I had an index card for every player. I forget how many shoe size boxes I filled. On the back, I would create a storyline for each. There were injuries which I determined in an omnipotent fashion. It was alarming how many stars from my rival teams that would fall prey to a devastating injury at the worst times.

As for others, I played any and all I could get my hands on. APBA was my first investment. Many newspapers were delivered before that purchase. I remember the APBA newsletters. I was always humbled by those that would play out a complete season for all the teams in a year. Or how their players would produce almost exactly like the live versions.

For the most part, computer video games underwhelmed me, with the exception of those that focus on simulation and management. I do like playing MLB The Show Road to the Show. Short of being added to the player database for OOTP, this is the likeliest way that I will make it to the majors.

i grew up playing a homemade baseball game with dice and baseball cards. used a notebook to make schedules and keep stats. then later found a game called longball and finally avalon hill had a baseball card game. on the computer i remember playing earl weaver. didn't play again until i found ootp 9, i think was my first one.

I played a lot of FPS 98. My favorite game because the action looked "real." I liked being able to adjust the uniforms and putting a team in the mountains of Wyoming. I think I used to create the Wyoming Wranglers. Jon Lieber was my stud ace pitcher.

I'd like to get into an FPS league if they're still around, as I try to figure out how to get FPS to play on a better computer.

After FPS, I moved to OOTP, which is a very different game. Not as graphic, but it still exists and importing the different years is a breeze.

Was this game called All Star Baseball? My dad mentioned playing something like that as a kid. He said the game made Rod Carew the best one.

Anyone remember Home Run, Atari's baseball game from the early '80s?

Truth is, I was an extreme Strat-O-Matic nut throughout most of the '80s. I had the complete sets from 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990. These were all table top sets until 1990, when I got a version that was compatible with my Commodore 64. I was going through a completely epic simulation of the 1990 season when the Commodore 64 konked out on me. Blah. All of those wasted stats. Seriously, though, I had them saved to one of those old 5 3/4" floppies, and I was able to print them out on a friend's computer. They were exported to a notebook, and off I went. I made it about 3/4 of the way through the season before I just kind of lost interest.

Seriously, though, I was in a tabletop Strat-O-Matic keeper league throughout most of that time. 1993 was the last season I played. I was kind of kicked out of the league because I was using Bill James statistical methods to select my players, and I had a great amount of success doing it.

I was exposed to Front Page Baseball in the early '90s, but I consider those "the lost years" due to the fact that I was working two full time jobs and was using all of my extra cash for beer. Those years lasted from about 1994 to about 1997. That's when I discovered Baseball Mogul.

In 2002, I discovered Season Ticket Baseball, which I believe was a rebrand of OOTP Baseball that was released for two seasons. I believe I bought Baseball Mogul for the 2004 and 2006 seasons, but I have been strictly an OOTP Baseball player since the 2007 product.

I'm guessing I've logged about 20,000 hours on baseball simulators in the last 20 years. I did try to play in an online league at one point, but I discovered that I wasn't nearly as good as I thought I was.
