Why does Steam need to "update" my OOTP18 every day

I posted this on Steam discussions and don't expect to get an answer...hardly anyone ever answers questions on the Steam discussions boards, anyway.
Basically, since the most recent OOTP18 patch, for several days now every time I launch OOTP 18, Steam is "updating" it. It's only a minor annoyance of about 30 seconds until I'm able to play the game, but still.
I know this isn't a bug (like the complete lack of foul outs to the catcher isn't a real "bug"), but it is an annoyance.
Any idea why this might be happening? Anyone?

Is OOTP18 being updated or just the Steam client?

Are you subscribed to anything in the workshop? If so, whenever one is updated your game will get updated.

I use the Steam version as well and don't have this issue. I also don't log out of Steam every day either though; however, when I do happen to restart it I don't see this.

First off let me say, I'm kind of scared to respond here, because I truly don't know what I did to get this to stop. Monday I tried to install the Historical Facegens mod. Something happened when I did this and from that point on, each time I started OOTP the game would show Steam is updating and the blue progress bar would cycle 1 or 2 times before the game would load.

The Historical Facegens hasn't been updated since it was fixed on Monday. 2017 Debut Facegens gets updated pretty regularly.

...maybe THAT's the reason. To answer the above question, it's not the generic Steam itself updating (although of course it does that every once in a while)...it may be because I subscribe to the workshops? (Hist. Facegens being one of the items)
Anyway, it's a minor blip, but...every single day?

When my game started doing the update thing each time I opened it, was Monday night. After I got home from work and tried to install the historical facegens. Something didn't load right. It was almost as if it tried doing so and stopped. Then from that point on, each time I would start OOTP it would say the game was updating. Thing is, I messed around with some things and somehow managed to get the game to stop doing the update thing. Problem is, I'm not sure what I did, so I can't say do this and it will stop.

Its probably just Steam uploading your save to the cloud so that you can continue your save anywhere. Usually it does it after you close the game though.

I'm not aware that that is possible. Any way you could walk me through it? Best probably in another thread. I'm sceptical because my understanding is that OOTP has a very defined path to saved games and "remote" saves are not workable. I've tried every remote save idea posted in recent years and none have worked. PEBKAC I'm sure.

FWIW on the topic Steam always updates on start up or wake up on all my computers. It is annoying because quite often my network connection is not complete and Steam cycles endlessly. I suppose I should delay it on startup etc.

Not sure about that; Steam never paused to do that during several months of playing OOTP 17... and only has done this "pause to update" for OOTP 18 over the past week or so. STILL does it every time I start the game. I think it has everything to do with the latest patch "updating workshop issues"...which I don't think it DID.
Since I'm not a DEV, though, I can't be positive.

On your Steam page...at the bottom, does it say something like downloaded 2 of 2? If you click on that do you get a page with a usage type graph or on the top and below that does it say OOTP 18? Now over to the far right does it say "need to update?" If you hit update, does it appear to do so, but stop and then you get close to center of screen something saying disk write error or disk read error? This is what was happening to me.

I checked my steam settings and under cloud it states that this is to present a consistent experience across computers. Nothing about game saves.

Steam does this with other games. I was just assuming it works for this game too. I havent actually tried it myself my bad

Yes and no. Started a new random debut league Saturday. Small 8 team league, I'm roughly 50 games in and so far, no quakes. But, I had a 1921 historical league with real minors going just prior and was getting them on a regular basis. Funny thing is, I noticed if I played the next game at the same stadium, the info boxes would be back in the locations I put them and would remain there until the next earthquake.

Saturday, I actually removed all the historical ballpark mod from my game. Figured I could always reinstall it. So far, I haven't had a quake with this small random league. My next test will be to set up another historical league and see what happens. The fact that no one else has complained about this, makes me believe it's something unique to my download and maybe even my fault.

Ugh! Started fresh 1921 historical league with historical minors. 10 games in and I had my first quake. Just can't wrap my head around what could cause this.

Yeah, mine's doing that, too, with Statistic, Quick-Starts, World Templates, etc.. all loading or updating before starting. In my case, it may (or not) have to do with having the stand-alone installed, too. If I haven't used it prior to opening the game, though, I don't know why it'd have to check.
