Signing with a new team mid-season

Does signing with a new team in the middle of the season erase the progress you have with the current team? Garbage teams want me to sign, but I'm hesitant since I don't want to leave my first place team (and all the GM points) that I've rebuilt.

I won a championship with my WHL team and decided to quit after the draft and find a better job.
I didn't get any GM points for this year at all, so I had to load an old savegame, wait two more weeks until I get the points and then resign.

Based on this experience only the results with your current club are considered.
