So how much IS Jason Kendall worth?

Yea is overpaid by a wide margin, but how much is he worth? How much would you pay for a singles hitting catcher with some speed and middling defensive skills with an OBP of around 400? He is not going to steel many bases, but he goes from first to third pretty darn quick still. He is a good baserunner. He is also 29.

What would he get on the open market? I am intersted in the opinions of non-bucs fans on this.

$4M/year? OBP won't get the big bucks for you, but some team would snatch him up as an FA.

He was pretty good until he shattered his ankle. Before the injuiry he was more worth the money. What speed he had is mostly gone and he has no power. I would guess $5 million per year

Maybe OBP won't pay, but BA sure will, especially for a C. Mike Lieberthal is paid over 7 mil this season with about the same BA, slightly lower OBP, and slightly higher SLG. And it's not like Lieberthal is any good on defense.

Right now Kendall is still a top hitting catcher. 4~6mil is not too out of line.

Whoa now, Lieby is one of the BEST defensive C's in the game today, he has B range! At least

I'd say he's worth about 4 or 5 million. He's a good contact hitter, and still even post injury has pretty good speed for a catcher. Good top of the order hitter.

I'd say he's either a good #2 or #8 hitter. His OBP and lack of strikeouts are good for the top of the order, but he's also been referred to as an ideal #8 hitter, as he can be counted on to reach base, or at least make contact, in front of the pitcher. Probably the main reason he bats at the top for the Pirates is because they don't have anybody else who can do it. I'd prefer somebody with a better bat in the 2 hole, somebody with a little more pop.

After reading this, I have to say Jason Kendall is worth at least $45 million.

The "ideal #8 hitter" idea is pure fantasy. For Kendall to reasonably fit at #8, the lineup must be the best in the league. Maybe I can say Barry Bonds is an idea #8 too. Bonds can be counted on to reach base in front of the pitcher better than Kendall.

Why waste a 400 OBP that low in the lineup? You think the pitcher can drive him in after he gets on base? Even for the best offensive lineups in the leagues, Red Sox and Braves, Kendall would be an idea #1 hitter. Better than both Furcal and Damon.

However, that $45 million is distributed over the years. Can you breakdown the annual fee for us?

Unsure, thought I don't see why we couldn't just suck out all his bone marrow right now for $23 million.
