				Amazing World Series

This is a post about how deliciously great baseball can be - even when it's OOTP-simulated baseball.

I just finished an amazing world series. The 1878 world series (yes there is such a thing in my alternate fictional universe) saw the Buffalo Hoggees defeat the Cincinnati Reds in 6 games. All six of these games were decided by 1 run - something that has never happened IRL. In 5 of the games the lead changed at least once and in the 6th game the lead became a tie. There were 2 extra-inning games. Game 1 was probably the most exciting. Buffalo was down 8-1 in the 7th, but scored 4 in the 7th and 4 more in the 8th to win 9-8. Buffalo took the lead on a single to shallow right scoring the the runner at third with a close play at the plate. Game 2 saw another late comeback by Buffalo, this time they were down 5-2 in the 7th and again scored 4 runs to win 6-5. Buffalo took the lead on this one when their lumbering slow-footed catcher managed to score from first on a double to the gap in left. Game 3 saw Cincinnati come up with a 2-run walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to win 3-2. Cincinnati won game 4 once again with a run-scoring walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to win 2-1 and tie the series. Game 5 lasted 12 innings, with Buffalo scoring on a squeeze play in the top of the 12th. Cincinnati got the potential tying run to second with one out in the bottom of the 12th, but failed to score and Buffalo won 3-2. Buffalo won game 6 and the series 2-1, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. A single, a stolen base and a walk-off single for the series... Such fun! |

				Wow, It Happened Again!

Never in real life has a World Series been decided by all 1-run games.

In my last post I reported on the exciting 1878 world series in my fictional league - all decided by 1-run games. Now in 1879, it happened again! This time it was a 4-game sweep of the Cardinals by Buffalo - but once again, all 1-run games. Game 1 was a back and forth affair, Cardinals leading by 2, then Buffalo leading by 1, then Buffalo leading by 3, then tied 5-5 in the 7th. Buffalo wins in the bottom of the 9th on an error, a single and a run-scoring walk-off single. Buffalo 6 St. Louis 5. Game 2 saw Buffalo score 2 in the first, answered immediately by 2 Cardinal runs in the 2nd. Buffalo scored one in the 6th on a double and a single and won 3 to 2. St. Louis out-hit Buffalo in this game 13 to 7. Game 3 was the only extra-inning game in the series. The Cardinals scored 3 in the first, but Buffalo came back with 4 in the fourth. After 7, it was tied 5-5. With 2 out in the top of the tenth, the Buffalo first baseman, Teter, walks, then scores on a single by third baseman, Regush and a throwing error by the Cardinal center-fielder, Michaud. Buffalo wins 6-5. In Game 4, the Cardinals scored 1 in the first; Buffalo answered with 2 in the second and that was it for the scoring. Buffalo wins 2-1. This was a 2-hit complete game by Steve Baggett, the Buffalo pitcher. This series didn't have the out-and-out drama and excitement of last year's, but to have two world series in a row - 10 games - all decided by one run.... pretty amazing! |

				Another unusual series

OK, the string of 1-run world series games came to an end in 1880, but there was something else about the 1880 series has never happened in real life - the home team lost every game!

Buffalo won the series in 7 against the New York Giants. The series opened in New York with 2 wins by Buffalo. Buffalo then lost all three at home. Then won both games again in New York to win the series. So, now it's three simulated years in a row with real-life-unprecedented occurrences... |
