Starter as U1 player in another position - not allowed?

Hey all,
Finally digging in after using OOTP very lightly in the past but using the mobile version a lot. I'm trying to do the following with the 2017 A's in Depth Chart:

1. Have Rajai Davis as CF as a starter and Matt Joyce in RF
2. Have Matt Joyce as the U1 player for CF after Rajai Davis and then have the RF U1 player, Mark Canha, slide up and play RF.

The UI doesn't seem to let me drag a starter to another position's U1 - i.e., "You shift to CF if Rajai is tired, then Canha takes your place."

Is this not allowed in the game?

Uncheck the "auto-sync lineups and depth charts" box.
