Do game saves have a shelf life?

So I have no life outside OOTP and find myself in the year 2149 (don't hate!) in what started as an MLB Startup for the 2015 season.

Ever since 15 game save years ago, I've started having many crashes randomly. My viewpoint is that there is just so much data in this save that the game simply cannot handle it.

I've deleted all minor leaguers who haven't reached the majors (170,000 total players) Deleted every storyline email I've gotten, every box score, and unimportant stuff like that. The crashes are still bad. OOTP 17 by the way.

Is this because of my game save's size or just OOTP being bad? Is it time to finally retire this game save as it might just be too big to function well? I can no longer look at past trades as it just outright crashes every time!

good question .... I am considering to start over myself as I am in the year 2062. I am impressed with where you are and I myself have been curious as to how far along we all are. I don't have much of a life myself either but I do take breaks to play Iracing sim on occasion. Might be why I am not close to you there LOL .... I hope we can learn about your original question. I would like to know this as well but admittedly without knowing much on data rate I would think it would continue to be good until we begin to run out of hard drive space or some corruption creeps in. Hard drive issues. Anyways hope we can get a real answer soon Truth be told I never thought to ask that question.

Good lord, I hope not!!! This is very alarming to me. The things you have shared here in this post are very concerning. One of the MAIN reasons/factors I play OOTP is OOTP's ability to track and save a Living Baseball Universe from Version to Version (for example; OOTP 11 to OOTP 12 to OOTP 13 to OOTP 14 and so on and so on), it's Statistical Database, Tracking Abilities and Detail, Immersiveness and Customization. If OOTP is crashing after so many Seasons/Years (in-game, or course), this NEEDS to be looked at, like quick, lol. I Have 3 Hard Drives (two SSDs and one HDD. I have 3 TeraBytes set aside for OOTP alone and if more is needed later, I can throw in another 7 drives because I have expansion bays that allow it, lol.

Anyway.....I sincerely hope this isn't an unfixable and/or a repetitive problem. =/

2149 is impressive! I usually get to a point where I want to start over and I tend to start a new game for each version. That is some serious commitment.

i've simmed out that far without many problems... are you doing anything before a crash each time it happens? i've noticed in those longer-term test sims that if i changed an LTM during the season, it crashed within a week-month-shortly after... it happened 3-5 times before i realized that particular behaviour was preceding each of those crashes. i stopped doing that... it didn't crash during simulation after that. (would crash within a month or so? it wouldn't take long.. no error, screen just poofed and no ootp visible in process list - would revert to last auto-save as expected)

othwerwise you may want to try this:

deleting players is probably the only thing you can do in regard to performance... you must purge them from the data base to actually remove their entry from it... when deleted they are just removed from the league, but all the data is still there, so the pc has to sift through it when querying the db....-> "PURGE" the db, on the db settings "available actions" drop down box.

170k removed will be noticeable... some things wil get screwed up, though.... e.g. your retired #'s and maybe even some other asthetic things tied to playerID that they didn't account for. those playerID will be re-used... hence old messages from before the purge may point to the wrong player, now.

player stats / team stats will be fine.... as it suggests, do make a backup before purging, though. only asthetic stuff will be screwed up and not all of it.

keeping boxscores and ancillary stuff like that shouldn't be a problem. those aren't in the db, they are just a skeleton for info pulled from it. if they sit dormant, it's just a couple associated files, i think... no problem there if they build up in quantity, except HDD/SSD space.

it does take up lots of space after ~200 years, i bet. maybe a 2-3GB ".LG" directory with all of that stuff kept. i'd make that your only concern about messages/storylines that stuff... although you already deleted it? couldn't have been too important to you.

if you ahve a backup with that stuff, still.... try the purge with that backupu and see if it is "better" and yuo get to keep that stuff.
