What should I do when the game comes out on the 20th?

Basically is there any advantage to waiting until the real game releases on the 24th to start playing a main save or is it okay to play my main save when the beta version comes out? I have been waiting for what seems like forever to start my Oakland A's save and i dont want to have to restart if anything goes wrong. (This is my first year getting the game at launch so if this is a ridiculous concern, don't rip me lol)

Also, is it recommended to wait until Opening Day rosters are out? Not that it will probably matter too much in the long run, but I would like everything to be as accurate as possible but it's not that much of a big deal to me.

Last, what do I do on the 20th? Like how do I actually get the game? I already pre-ordered but I'm not too sure what to do on the 20th.

Thanks in advance, all info is appreciated.

You get a link to download the public beta.

I currently run 17 saved games on 18 and they work just fine. I've been setting up a new fictional league for a while to be ready by the time 18 is released publicly, so that's what I recommend. Spend a few days to setup.

The primary advantage to waiting is that the game will probably be patched at least once between the time the late beta is released and the official launch, just as it is every year. Obviously, that means people who start playing on the 24th will be dealing with a slighly more polished product.

The primary advantage to jumping right in on the 20th will be just that...you'll be able to jump right in and start playing ahead of the official release date. Trust me, I've done it both ways over the years. If you didn't pre-order, those last 2-3 days before the official release can be positively agonizing, especially when visiting this board and seeing how much fun people are already having with the game while you're still waiting.

You'll be sent a download link via email for the beta on the 20th. You won't have to do anything except check your email (and SPAM folder perhaps, depending on your email settings) in eager anticipation.

Thank you everybody. I guess I'll play a season or two with my Yankees until the game officially comes out on the 24th or start my backup save of the Marlins, either way I'll just be glad to be playing OOTP 18.

Anything though about roster updates for Opening Day?

For accurate opening day rosters you will have to wait until just after opening day

I think the first thing you do when a new version comes out is to start whatever you feel like playing that would take advantage of new features which you are interested in. For example, I have zero interest in the tournaments and promotion/relegation, so I won't be looking at that. Instead, I'll start historical games that take advantage of the new minor league options. I'll start one in 1914 to see how the Federal League is handled. I'll start one in a year that has a Negro League season to find out how that feature has been implemented. I'll try to figure out which, if any, minor league seasons have been added and whether I think the minor league feature is ready for a concentrated replay. By the time of the final release, I'll know what projects I want to try with this version. Then I'll get to work on the customization and setup.

Someone else may want to start an English soccer setup playing baseball instead and see how promotion and relegation work. Or a giant tournament with as many historical teams as the game will handle. The key is to use the time to experiment, try several different starts, and settle on your main project.

I'm not sure where that came from but I think the actual date we're planning on for the pre-release/beta release is the 20th, not the 17th.

So I wouldn't spread that around too much, because if we did say the 17th somewhere, I'm almost certain it was a typo.

Markus one last official plea,

Here are some reasons to do it Friday.

1. Let us have a Happy St Paddy Day
2. We can drink Green Beer and play OOTP
3. We can watch the NCAA Tourny and play OOTP.
4. Great Promotional to release it 3 days early.

If it is not operationally possible to do we understand but I was always taught it never hurts to ask.

It's always a smart idea to back up your files before you move to the next version ... just in case the game has a weird bug in it.

In that case you can simply go back to your backup-file and continue from there

The best way to do this, in my opinion, is the "zip-method" - http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=267016
