Tried my hand at historical facegen
I wasn't satisfied with a few players, so, for the first time, I tried the facegen modeler. If anyone is interested, here's Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Gorman Thomas.

There are many players that you pull up in the game and you are like, thats not this guy or that guy. Although i have not redone them in a few years i have many accurate versions of Big Mac, Lance Johnson, Baines, Konerko & Bagwell to name a few. Ps great job on those.

We had such a diverse group doing the original historical facegens there was a vast difference in quality of work. Coming down to ability of computers and availability of good pics.
There was also at 1st some question as to how to handle beards and such (i.e. Sparky Lyle). The original feeling (keeping in mind facegen was new) was to have guys younger and without beards because you could add beards and age them in game. Many of the updates have much better faces but it's still hard to compile all the updates together. I think the roughest and most variable era is the late 70s and 80s because it's such a mix of different looks for players and a lot of players have been added as older versions when they became coaches.

Just think what a pain in the a** but thrilling project that was. At the time I had a pretty good computer and it still took about 5-7 minutes to do a regular facegen. I'd have 3 instances of the program up and be cycling through guys with two processing and one being set up.
Everyone who volunteered was great but it was maddening chaos. Guys volunteering where it wasn't needed. Inconsistent quality of source pics. Colorizing or keeping B&W. No understanding the program. Organizing 27000 facegens. Naming conventions since there were 3 databases being used. It would have been awesome if a lot of the people who do facegens now were here in the beginning. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to organize and update the entire historical facegen set.

Yep, I remember the project too. It was so fast and big. I know tried some, but it was really hard to do, especially earlier players. I was trying the '54 Indians and it was really hard to find good pictures. I was pretty unsatisfied with my efforts. Agree that an update could be in order. The biggest thing is just getting a consistent skin tone. You get everything from ghost white to bright orange.
Nice work Mr. Strickert! |

Indeed it was, but it was a fun learning project. After all those years I continue to work on them (it's a long task to do it starting in 1871), but I'm not satisfied enough to think of making my works public yet.
At least I'm better, and my computer is much better, than when we made the initial set
