Draft Pick Trading
Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere - I did search first, but couldn't find anything that specifically referenced this topic.
Invariably I start a current MLB season and then tweak some of the rules/settings to suit my style of play. One thing I've always done is to enable draft pick trading. In OOTP17 it worked differently than it had previously. Enabling that option allowed picks to be included in trades, but the first season draft wasn't changed. This lead to the unusual situation where I could trade away all my picks for prospects...but then would still have those picks to make in the draft. This only applied to the first season, after that it reverted to type (i.e. you could trade picks between teams, and those picks would then be with the new team come draft day). The new behaviour spoiled my enjoyment of the game a little - it seemed slightly illogical to make the option available but then have it only half work at the start of the season. I wondered if this would be the same for OOTP18, or if this option would revert back to how it worked before 17? |

Not sure if this is what you meant, but in my games the picks would go away from the trade screen, but it didn't seem to update the draft order. I just exported the draft order and manually changed it in excel and then imported it back into OOTP17.
It didn't take much work as I would wait until before the draft and just use the transaction list and search and replace the teams that I traded with in the excel file. OOTP17 was my first time playing, so not sure how it used to work. Last edited by Vonschlick; 02-27-2017 at 11:22 AM. |

Prior to OOTP17 you could enable draft pick trading, and any picks traded would reflect immediately in the draft order for the coming draft. With OOTP17 the draft order was preserved for the first season. So in that first season (and only the first season) you could trade your draft picks after enabling the option, but the draft order didn't change, and you would still have your original picks come draft day. After season one it worked as expected. Last edited by oztrich1; 02-28-2017 at 12:25 PM. Reason: Clarity |

In other words, it's a bug. Traded picks in the year 1 draft weren't being moved.

It still seems, in my mind, to create an illogical situation; and works at odds to how the setting implies it should. I'm hopeful this will be changed back for OOTP18, which is why I posted initially. |

draft picks trading DO indeed work as promised. I have checked and made mental notes on my trades that dealt with picks and on draft day you will see the list and take note that the drafts you traded are in effect.

If you start a "new standard game" using MLB rosters and enable "Allow draft pick trading", the 2016 draft order will not change regardless of which draft picks you trade away (or trade for). I've traded every single one of my picks away to gain players, and then had a pick in every round of the 2016 draft. The first time that happened I hadn't even realised until draft day, but I then created a new game specifically to test the behaviour. After the first season the draft order changes to reflect any picks that are traded. I believed it was a bug and raised it as such, but the response was that this was done deliberately to protect the first season draft order. To me that doesn't sit right for a few reasons: 1) it doesn't make sense logically to allow a situation where the trading framework allows picks to be included as a weighted factor in trades but these aren't actually being moved between teams. 2) there is no indication in game (either in the settings or otherwise) that the 2016 draft order is protected and that option will therefore only take effect from season 2 onwards. 3) this behaviour is new in OOTP17 - previous versions of the game reflected changes to the draft order from season 1 when that setting was enabled. I'm hoping OOTP18 reverts to the previous behaviour for this setting. |

the first couple months I am not so worried about once June draft takes place. BTW the draft position is based on final standings from previous season so that would never change anyways. So the only thing you really have to worry about is the trading of picks BEFORE june. Have never tested that aspect of the first June draft.
I have never had any issues with it and when people started to moan about it and or ask inquiry questions on it I kept a sharp eye on it in my league and its worked PERFECT. draft position has been perfect collecting other teams draft is perfect in their proper draft spot. Also when I give up mine is done great. |

The issue is the inconsistency introduced by enabling this option - in the first season you can merrily trade picks backwards and forwards, but when the draft day starts all teams are reset to their original picks. So, as I mentioned before, you can trade away all your picks in return for players and still have those picks to use in the draft. That shouldn't be allowed. From season two onwards you can trade picks backwards and forwards and those picks move to the receiving team. Trade away all your picks and you're sitting out the draft. Which is how it should work every season (and is how that option worked for every season prior to OOTP17). |

what I do not understand is your idea of backwards and forward draft picking ??? I am thinking a couple things but not sure .... In my mind it isn't logical at least not till you explain

I'm talking about the in-game setting which enables the ability to trade draft picks between teams. And how it doesn't work logically for the first draft in a game started with MLB rosters (I posted above the steps to create the right game with the option enabled). |
