Warm up pitches
Ok I don't think I still understand why any pitcher still does this between innings. The 10 or so warm up pitches.
Especially now where pitch counts are carefully monitored. 100 pitches and you are out. Except technically, a pitcher who throws 10 warm up pitches before innings by inning 7 might have thrown 150 pitches not 90. So if you want to get more out of starters, why not 1 or maybe 2. They should remember what the mound is like from 10 minutes ago. Then starters could be ready for 120 or more pitches as they are actually saving their arm for the game. Comments |

I do like where your thinking is on this. The easy answer is that the warm up pitches aren't anything close to max velocity/effort. Argument I would make is stop preaching max velocity/effort and teach them how to actually pitch. Then they could throw more and stay around longer per start.

I'm pretty sure the pitchers don't do it without reason.
I guess if the maximum effort pitches a reliever throws are like a sprint and the close to maximum effort of a starter are like a 400 meter/450 yard dash, most warm up pitches are closer to the effort of a simple jog. I can jog for 10km/6 miles, while I'd be able to sprint or dash much less, so I don't think warm up pitches sap that much of total stamina. And in any case, I'm pretty sure pitchers in any case need warming up to get their full velocity, control and stuff. If skipping on those warm up pitches results in 89 mph meatballs down broadway, no one needs that extra stamina, because they will leave after 30 pitches with a double digit ERA. Furthermore, I'd bet that going full effort on a cold arm will significantly increase injury risk.

They throw 50-60 pitches before the game starts. What should be done about that?

Probably shouldn't risk injury by having BP either...
Or running the bases...how many guys get hurt running the bases? With today's technology we can just award them the most likely base depending upon where the ball lands.
