Dexter Pirates, By Request
From the very poorly lit 1967 shoot that's George Spriggs (1965) and from 1968 a very nice image of Hall of Famer Jim Bunning (1955).

By Request: Dexter Yankees
There weren't any particularly obscure players in the Dexter shoots at the Yankees camp in 1967 or 1968 (they skipped Tony Przybycien for some reason) but here are two shots of players not frequently seen in Pinstripes: Billy Bryan (1961) and Charley Smith (1960), both literally bellying up to a photographer's stand that keeps them more or less aligned with desired lighting and background.
On previous questions: I'm confident the Phillies stuck to the standard red uniforms all throughout the '60s. As noted with the images of Joey Jay and Jim Gentile the negative colors have "turned" with age and the best efforts to color correct produce very mixed results. As to specific players: I believe there is a Frank Malzone/Angels. I'll be checking and putting it in the pile for tomorrow and as a reminder if anybody has any specific requests ask now or prepare to hold your piece for at least a month as I have no present plans to go back to my shop after this next trip. Vince Valentini KE 351-352
Have continued to work on identifying the Cub pitcher in Topps Vault photos KE 351 and 352 from a couple of days ago. My best bet is that it is Vince Valentini, who was a non-roster invitee with the Cubs in their spring camp in 1980. The baseball card shows him with the 1980 Wichita Aeros (a TCMA card). He was a right-handed pitcher.

I rarely pop in these parts anymore. But I'm glad I did today. Merkle, these Dexter images are a true treasure. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. If I was still in the image sleuthing/collection game, you'd be giving me a new meaning to "Merkle's Boner."

The subtle "tells" often confirm the photo IDs. Notice how Valentini is wearing his Wichita cap just slightly off-angle - and so is the Cub guy.

Merk, is Gary Nolan one who was not given the red cap/sleeves? I would like one of him in the white cap/sleeveless if available.
Thank you sir |

No Nolan
Not among the Dexter images. Your best bet remains that great color cover shot from June 3, 1967 - bunch of them on eBay.

Ron Allen 1972
Dick's brother - who we still haven't seen in color during his only major league stint (Cardinals). This capless image from Phillies 1966 Spring Training uploaded by Topps today may be a stopgap for some needs.

Dick Allen 1963
Brother of Ron ;-)
From a photo session at Dodger Stadium in the autumn of 1970. You may have seen the results not only in the 1971 Topps set but also that year's Dodgers postcards and the beautiful Dodger Ticketron set. Wednesday Topps uploads (KE): 421-422 Fred Scherman; 423-424 Jimmie Schaffer; 425-426 Doug Schaefer (SF system: http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...schaef001dou); 427-428 Mac Scarce; 429-430 Randy Scarbery; 431-432 Pat Scanlon; 433-434 Gary Allenson; 435 Ron C. "Butch" Allen (Cleveland system: http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...allen-001ron); 436 Ron F. Allen (1972); 437-440 Dick Allen. Last edited by Merkle923; 01-04-2017 at 04:40 PM. |

Bill Robinson 1966
Didn't scan the Dexter Whitaker, that'll be a month, but here's the Dexter of Robinson, a lovely man who later became a friend and for whom I spent one game as bench coach when he managed in the Phillies' farm system. He, of course, prearranged with the home plate umpire to have me tossed out for arguing balls and strikes. I laughed all the way to the clubhouse.

Don Bosch 1966
And while we're on the subject of heavily-hyped 1967 New York outfielders obtained from other teams in lopsided trades, here is the very unfortunate Don Bosch.
If you don't know the story, the Mets traded their first starting pitcher to ever record a winning record (Dennis Ribant) to Pittsburgh for Don Cardwell and Bosch, who won the CF job, started the first ten games, led off the first three, and promptly produced splits of .140/.184/.161 (his OPS+ was 1. Cardwell's OPS+ was 38). Not a lot of color of Bosch, and I never understood his exclusion from the 1967 Topps set since the Mets kept him in New York until the middle of June, and as his 1968 card clearly showed, they photographed him in Spring Training '67 just as Dexter did. Oh, and yes, there's a Scherman/Expos packet in the Topps files - from Spring Training 1976. Again, this does not mean they pulled it out when they grabbed the Schermans posted today, but the images do exist somewhere. And of course there's the 1976 SSPC Scherman/Expos head shot.
