When you play w historical minors, the PCL in the early 30's has a 200+ game schedule that pushes the offseason into very late October. So I'd first suggest experimenting with having a minor league that has a 250 game schedule (not sure where you'd find one; you might have to create it), and see what happens. As far as I've seen, majors won't advance to the offseason until all minors have finished their season... Give it a shot!

Then, if that works, you can push the minors into an even longer season and adjust your majors accordingly. See what happens...

Obviously, the key is experimenting & testing it out before actually instituting it in your league.

To answer your question, you can set the start date for your league to whatever you want it to be. Then, with a long schedule, that will put the end date far back. The game will read the start date you selected for the next season, and voila! A short offseason.

But like the Hef said, experiment with test leagues before you start your real one.

Yea i tested that and it didnt work. It scheduled everything the same time apart as usual, putting FA filings halfway into the season

So theres no way to do this? Markus, can you put this into OOTP 18? Not a big priority, but probably not hard to code. Just add an option for amount of days for the offseason

After it schedules things, you can go and edit league events to occur on other dates. I don't remember where the edit league events screen is off-hand but I know it exists.

is this what you were looking for? it's the closest thing i could find ....

from the manual:

The League Events screen (League Menu >> Basics section >> Newspaper >> News Listing tab >> League Events tab, or League Menu >> Info and Reports >> League Events) is a dynamically changing list of key events in your league's annual schedule:

League events often denote important decision-making points for managers. See League Events for more information on the concept of league events and why they are important. By default, only major events are listed on this page. However, there is a List Minor Awards check box in the upper right. If this is selected, a number of minor awards will be added to the list, such as the Player of the Week and Player of the Month announcements.
Warning! The League Events screen only shows events from the currently selected league. If you have leagues with different settings, such as one league with free agency and one without, the leagues might have different key dates. Make sure you're looking at the right league!
Adding Events

You can also add custom events to your league. To do so, click the Add Event button, enter a name and date for your event, and click the Save and Refresh button. The event will be added to your events list. This is helpful, too, because using auto-play you can now sim directly to your event! On the day of your custom event, the event will also display on the Manager Home Screen. Custom events do not recur, so if you want the same event each year, you will have to create it once per year.
Deleting Events

To delete an event, simply click the Delete Event button next to any event. You will be prompted to confirm the delete. Be careful, though! Deleted annual events will still occur again in future years.

........................

(the add event is at the very bottom of the page i discovered)

It a tab off of the league news screen. Editing the dates manually will get you what you want

Would I need to do this every season or would it carry over?

Every season. It would be nice to be able to set some default dates. I have to change mine every season

Currently as we have it setup, anything less than about 80 days for the off-season might have some weird date listings that would require manual intervention. You might be able to get away with a ~50 day off-season, but I wouldn't expect anything less than that to work very well.

We can potentially look at making it a bit better next year, but can't adjust for every off-season length (especially since off-season dates will vary depending on all the various options you have selected).

For now, the best bet is to manually re-order events every year, unfortunately.

Maybe we could get some date input option for things like free agency much like how we can set draft dates

Although FAs will probably still take a while to sign, so a short FA period like in the NFL where everyone signs in a flurry would be hard

Make the winter meetings span the entire offseason

But if the AI knew the date spring training and the regular season was to start, wouldn't that give it some idea when free agent signings need to be finalized by?

I play leagues with 200 plus teams and with the playoffs the season doesn't end till late December.

The more playoff teams the lesser length of the offseason.

I think once you reach the playoffs you can go into the schedule and also move the date of the start of the games to whatever you want.

I have used those before and had nothing but problems year to year. Mind you it was not OOTP17 but, after one bad experience I stopped.
