You may be doing some of them too often. Pinch hitters, for instance, tend to underperform. It's best to save them for situations in which a hit or walk is vital and the pinch hitter is clearly better at bat than the man he replaces.

As for "pitch to contact", that's a tactic that should be used rarely - and not at all if your defense isn't first rate.

I don't know if this is applicable to the Pirates as well, but with the Red Sox I built a roster where hitting average is more important than power or speed and it worked extremely well.

My seasons:

2015: 87/76, 3rd in division, made playoffs, lost in Wildcard series
2016: 95/67, 2nd in division, made playoffs, eliminated in Division series
2017: 90/72, 2nd in dvision, made playoffs, eliminated in League series
2018: 105/57, 1st in division, made playoffs, won world series

Currently 21/11 in 2019 and 1st in the division.

I tried several saves with the Red Sox and the Yankees before which didn't work out too well, but focusing on hitting average over anything else did the trick for me.
