Biggest playoff upsets?
This has got to be up there on the all-time list of playoff underdog wins. The Portland Loggers win their first championship against the record-setting, 119-win Florida Blue Herons. This despite the fact that the Herons had a triple-crown winner, Jose Zaldez, and swept all four post-season awards (MVP, Best Pitcher, ROY, and Best Reliever). Not to mention that the Loggers had the worst record of the four post-season teams, a whopping 24 games worse than Florida, and didn't sneak into the playoffs until the last day of the season by winning their division. Both wild-card teams, 102-win Boston and 98-win Indiana, had better records.
![]() Way to get the job done, Loggers! ![]() See, Westheim, a Portland team can win!

In a LDS, my top two aces pitched back to back shutouts in games #1 & #2. The other team managed to win the next two, and the last one, with an ace ready to start AT HOME… They shelled him.

Ironically, I, too, had a team out of Portland w/ a miracle run.
The 1926 Oregon Pioneers with an 80-74 record defeated the Missouri Compromise, who had 105 wins (in a 3-0 sweep), then went on to beat the Rose in the World Series (4-1).

At least we know OOTP is realistic
These teams didn't win the World Series either. 1931 Philadelphia Athletics (107-45) 1954 Cleveland Indians (111-43) 1963 New York Yankees (104-57) 1990 Oakland Athletics (103-59) 1995 Cleveland Indians (100-44) 2001 Seattle Mariners (116-46) '63 Yankees & '90 Athletics were both swept in the WS. It happens to me all the time in OOTP playoffs, so I no longer get surprised when my powerhouse teams lose to huge underdogs. |

Was gonna say...the winningest teams have rarely done well in the wildcard era playoffs in real life.

Season series was 4-4. So perhaps Portland just had their number a bit.

In an interesting bit of trivia, NONE of the teams with the record of most wins in the regular season in the 4 major sports ended up actually winning their championship:
MLB: 1906 Cubs (not trying to jinx them), 2001 Mariners NFL: 2007 Patriots NHL: 1996 Red Wings NBA: 2016 Warriors |

That's quite fascinating. And it's a brand new bit of trivia since it wasn't true of the NBA until this year. (The previous best NBA team, the 1996 Bulls, did win the championship over Seattle). |

Well in all honesty, the playoffs in general are random in all sports, especially in baseball. Overall I think around 16% of the teams with the best record have won the World Series. It's all luck and who can win 4 games in a given 7 days.
