Finally Tried It..

So I've been playing OOTP on and off since OOTP 14...

I've never, ever done a historical league before in the years I've had the games. I got the urge to finally give it a go a few days back, and wow, what I have been missing.

I get kinda bored once I get into the years past 2035+ b/c 95% of the players are fictional, and I more into the realism with actual real life players. So I started in 2005 with the Texas Rangers and got hooked on historical play. Glad I tried it, finally.

Another thing you can try is historical MLB, fictional players. I start in 1901 and let the league evolve according to history but with no real players (there is a procedure to flush them out, delete them, restock the league with fictional players to start, and no real rookies after that). Best of both worlds, to me.

Do you know the step-by-step for this? I think I'd like to try it.

I've been wanting to find time to do this. Definitely on the to-do list when I get time off around the holidays.

Easiest way I found to do this is to create a historical league then go to "GAME SETTINGS" then to "LEAGUE SETTINGS". Under this screen find the area named "ROSTER FUNCTIONS" located in the middle column halfway down. Then click "CLEAR ROSTERS" which makes all the players free agents. Then click the line "FILL TEAMS WITH FICTIONAL PLAYERS." After that go to your free agent screen and use the box in the upper left corner to select all the players. Then move to available actions and click on "DELETE ALL FREE AGENTS." Real players will be removed from the game.

Yes, and just a few more things.
  • First, you must be the commissioner to do the free agent deletions. (You may need to delete real minor league players as well.)
  • Second, you may want to Schedule a Fantasy Draft after that. Only fictional players should be in the draft if you did things correctly.
  • Third, go to Retired Players and delete any real players that you find there.
  • Fourth, make sure these settings are in place (highlighted):

If you do "Fill teams with fictional players" like HuachucaThunder said, you won't need to do an initial fantasy draft.

When setting up the 1901 game initially, do you use minor leagues? How many?
Basically can you walk us through steps 2 through 5 of the set up?
