How closely related are OOTP & FHM in terms of coding/programming??

Not asking anyone to divulge any corporate secrets or anything, but I've never played FHM before and was wondering if they shared anything in common under the hood.

The reason I'm curious is that I noticed that FHM finally has International Play, a feature I'd love to see OOTP have in some form or another. If the two games are similar under the hood, would it be possible to integrate whatever code FHM used to make that possible inside OOTP?

I only ask because whenever international play is requested in the request forum, someone invariably comes along and shoots down the idea on the grounds that it would take too long to program. My thinking is if the two games are similar enough to where at least some of the code is interchangeable, perhaps most of the heavy programming lifting that could make this feature feasible in OOTP has already been done.

The games are actually not that closely tied together. The internal structures and setups of each are way too different to actually share any specific code.

That being said, we will certainly share ideas and bounce stuff off of each other. So if we wanted to do some international stuff, we'd ask the FHM guys what they did, what they learned, and how it was set up. And if they want to do something that we've done, they'll similarly ask us. Certain helper files could likely be shared easily between the teams (ie. if they want to add threading support, they can probably just steal a handful of helper files that we use), but pretty much nothing that would touch the databases of either would be possible.

Thanks, Matt, for the in-depth answer. It's probably just as well in the long run that the code isn't interchangeable. You could only imagine some of the weird bugs in both games that would surface if it were, like having pitchers sent to the penalty box to warm up, or a Defenseman with four balls trying to skate.

Also, FHM uses a different core library (QT, which does things like interface functionality etc) because Sebastian & Malte started developing the game before joining us and did not want to start with the same library we use for OOTP (PISD). So, when someone asks, why is the interface functionality (not the look / layout) different, that is the reaosn.

Both OOTP and FM are amazing games. The best games for each sport, respectfully. I've probably put 500+ hours in to OOTP17 and, according to Steam, 412 hours in to FM16.

You can't go wrong with either game.

FM is a different game and company (still an amazing game).

Yeah, we're definitely not close enough to match up your dynasty Montreal Canadiens team against my dynasty New York Yankees club in a best-of-7 hockeyball final.

I wanted to see Sydney Crosby in the penalty box for catcher's interference.
