Unwritten Rules and Intentional Beanings

I asked for this last time and many people argued against it (which is fine), but I would like to see some of the 'unwritten rules' of baseball included, simply for realism.

It should be MUCH less likely for a player to try and steal second base when his team is up by 10 runs, for example. (Note: I didn't say it would NEVER happen, just that it would be less likely.)

I would also like to see intentional hit-by-pitches actually mean something. Warnings, ejections, retaliation... whatever.

What I DON'T like is pressing the hit batter button and having the announcer say "it looks like it grazed his uniform! He trots down to first" or whatever...

This seems like it would be really cool, but with the way the MLB is going, intentional beanballs are starting to be taboo and not endorsed.

The players stealing when up by a lot of runs though would be a good addition.

Beanballs SHOULD be taboo, but since we can play historical seasons, we shoudl be able to play like they did at those times.

Wow - I find it amazing that folks would argue against inclusion of anything in game play that would make the more like the real thing.

These are excellent ideas and I certainly agree with their inclusion in the next release of the game. Anything that adds to the realism of game play is good in my book!

I think the game should track "tension points".

This should be a hidden value, and is increased after "breaks of etiquette" like bunting or stealing during a blowout, by collisions on the basepaths, especially ones leading to injuries, hit by pitches - again a higher amount if injured, sometimes randomly after a homer (not every one, but sometimes you might get "hitter flipped his bat" or "hitter admired the blast", followed by "pitcher/catcher got something to say as hitter arrived at home plate"), and of course by actual fights and ejections.
You might add other things that are against baseball etiquette.

Once a certain threshold is reached, the probability of hit by pitches, brawls and so on increases. If this is tracked by player, you can also have the player increasing the threshold be marked for a fastball in the ribcage next time up as long as the game is not close and first base is open.

Those tension points would slowly decay, but only after a certain amount of other games was played. If a matchup aquired tension points, those would stay therefore for a time, leading to things as player x getting beaned in game two of a series for an actual or imagined transgression in game one.

A matchup could further on be marked as rivalry, making sure that tension points never decrease below a certain level. If there is a history of high tension between two teams, the rivalry can even develop on its own!

I'd also like to see a small pre-game message like "tensions have been high between those teams - expect fireworks".

The value needs to be capped of course, in order to prevent an escalating spiral of violence and beanballs.

if there is a wayfor them to implement this without it getting out of control it would be INCREDIBLE

Big thumbs up for this!

I imagine that MLB might have reservations about this, as they do provide a license to Markus, but it is quite historical, and I for one think that the true spirit of rivalry should be adopted into the game somehow.

Yankees-Mets, Cubs-White Sox, Cubs-Cards, Red Sox-Yankees, Giants-Dodgers, you name it, those rivalries have existed for years, and they won't go away ever.

Brawls, heck, even fan interference is part of these histories. There's no way to say it doesn't have legitimacy.

I do think that some of the elements of this would be difficult to incorporate, but I do think it's worth investing in some of the parts that could be added.

Great idea indeed.

Excellent ideas!

The game is amazing as it stands, but adding these types of "details" to it would make it all the better!
