Career Ending Injury - what happens to roster slot and contract

My 1B suffered a Career Ending Injury in the offseason immediately following the World Series and as of December 2nd he is still on my roster (Free Agency started) and his salary for the upcoming year as well as the next 4 years are still showing up in the finance tab.

My question is: what happens to his roster spot and contract? Will it automatically drop off on January 1st or do I have to release him? Do I have to pay his remaining 5 years of salary?

I need to pick up a 1B in Free Agency now as I don't have anyone on the farm who is worthy of being called up - but, I need to free up his $10m salary or else I don't have enough cash to sign anyone who has seen a baseball before.

Baseball contracts are guaranteed - so yes.

Players with CEIs usually retire, but maybe not straight away. And maybe he won't retire until the end of his contract in order to get paid - not sure.

Put him on the DL to free up a roster spot. He is injured, after all...

This sounds like a bug to me, or perhaps just a rare circumstance that is not considered properly by the financial system. If it were my game, I would use the commissioner mode to retire him. You should not be responsible for the remainder of his contract, and you would not have been if this had occurred during the season.

By the way, I don't think you can use the disabled list during the offseason.

I believe that he'll likely officially retire on Jan 1 as part of the yearly update that we do.

But.... this isn't real life. Real life includes contract insurance which is not modeled in the game.

can always test it as opposed to postulating (not toward any side in general). turn comissioner mode on and go to team settings after retiring someone some years left on their contract.

the argument "this isnt" or "is real life" can be used for either side, so i wouldn't base a decision on that logic, though. it's modelling real life, so that's not such an incredulous thing to expect that it model RL, within reason of course.

i'd be of the opinion it should be handled like RL. There should be repercussions for signing an old player expecting not to pay year(s) of a contract -- looks like an incredibly easy financial exploit to me... Versus the AI it wouldn't be so important, because it won't get p!ssy about it. After all, it's an inanimate object. However, in a multiplayer league i'd expect a rule on that one, if they are aware of it and care about the integrity of competition.

Well I'm only to December 17th now; this off-season is taking a while to go through as I am looking for ways to improve my team and farm league not to mention having to replace 7 coaches across my organization.

He is still on the roster and I will see what happens on the 1st - in response to this being an exploit, when I signed him he was 29 years old and coming into his prime. He played out 2 full seasons and was injured in September in his 3rd season with me and was stud. I just lost a rock at that position who batted between .290 and .313 with 25+ HR per year. Believe me, this hurts me far more than the AI.

Well, it's modeled in the sense that you don't have to pay it, which (in a rather abstract way) models insurance pretty well...

If a player retires because of a career ending injury they may decide to be a coach for the team. I know that certain players who suffer concussions usually retire If It's severe enough. Look at football players who get those spinal injuries they usually retire right after It happens.

I have force retired a player making over $2 million in the final year of his contract (because he was 41 years old, had no talent to play defense, wouldn't go to the minors, and it's a no DH league but he couldn't hit either) and it erased his contract immediately doing so. So if you need to retire him yourself in commissioner mode, it won't force you to keep the contract on your books. Otherwise I'm sure he'd retire on his own due to the career-ending injury, from what I've seen in my game.
