Padres: What if?

I played "what if" with the Padres. What if the owners actually cared about winning? What if profits wasn't the only thing they cared about? So I edited the owner, brought Spending up from 1 to 5 and changed Priority from 1 to 3. Then I increased the budget by $10-million.
I played as GM. First I fired the bench coach who was on steroids and brought in one that could be a good role model/teacher. Next I fired the manager and hitting coach and brought in ones who had actually had some experience. Andy Green is a nice guy and I like him, but you don't hire a major league manager who has never managed at any level (not even HS).
The first year (2016) was awful, 70-92. Drew Pomerance did throw the first no-hitter in team history. Made some moves during the off season and got Max Scherzer and Zack Greinke. Finished 2017 at 88-74.
During 2018 I made a trade and got Joe Ross. Finished 88-74 and got the final Wild Card spot. Lost the Wild card but went to the post season for the first time in 12 years. During the off season I landed Clayton Kershaw as a free agent (by accident). I made him a low offer and didn't expect him to take it. Boy was I surprised when he did. Right after I signed him, my owner died. His son took over. The first thing he did was cut my budget. So now I was over budget. I shopped my pitchers around but the only offers I got were for players making more than they were. I needed to cut payroll, not increase. Finally I traded Matt Carpenter and his $14-mil for an unproven rookie.
So for 2019 I had the 8th highest payroll but a great pitching staff. I started out slow, got hot in June and was in a penant race with Colorado all summer. In late Aug. the Rockies faded and I ran away with the NL West. I ended up going all the way to game 7 of the World Series, which I lost 2-1 to the Indians.
How did the owner reward me after the best season in franchise history? He cut my budget again.

Great article Greenbay and I believe every word you wrote. I stuck with that owner for four seasons and it started to affect my daily life. I even stopped petting the neighbor's dog on my way to work.

The last I had anything to do with him was when I changed clubs and noticed through the 'League News' subjects that he had passed away. I went as far as writing an obituary for the League Newspaper and gave him the respect I felt he deserved, along with my own personal goals for him to achieve in his afterlife.

I love the goals for the after life. I turned off the owners goals because I believe winning should be the goal. Unfortunately in real life that no longer seems to be the goal. The Padres actually have a group of about 50 owners/investors. for all of them to die at the same time they would have to all be on the same plane crash, maybe on the way to an owners retreat of something.
Back to OOTP, I'm at a cross roads. Do I give up on this team/owner? Or do I try and stick it out? Right now I have a rotation of Kershaw, Greinke, Scherzer and J. Ross. Most people would kill for that rotation. How can I walk away?

I understand. I don't know. For me it was a lifestyles choice, sticking with that owner while playing OOTP 17 in an asylum, or reconciling with the neighbor's dog. I chose the dog.

We are the Champions!
I stuck with it and just won the 2022 World Series. Beat the Redsox in 7 games to win San Diego's first ever World Series.
I know it's only a game, but winning it all feels pretty good. A lot better than all those seasons I didn't win.
Instead of trying to repeat the owner has already cut next years budget by $8-mil. In OTTP 18 there needs to be a way to kill your owner. Maybe beating him to death with a baseball bat in the parking garage, or throwing him from his owner's box to the angry fans below. The fall would break his legs and back, then the angry fans could beat him to death with $12 hot dogs. Aw justice!

Are you sure you're not playing with the Mets in the Jeff Wilpon era?

Congrats, well done to stick with it that long under less than optimal circumstances!

i'm sure you actually enjoy it... but turn it off!

it's your game world. make up anything you want and create a news story about it... then, it's part of the "record."

"Drunk fans stormed the padres front office today... The owner was found strangled to death in his office. The large foamy "2022! We're #1!" finger portruding from his mouth the likely cause."
