Injury and News logs too big
I started the league with the setting to keep all logs. Now, they are opening in the browser window and it annoys me.
Is there anyway that I can reset these logs? I have already tried changing the setting to save only 2 years, but I went through an offseason with no change, i.e. entries from all previous years (3) are still displayed. The logs used to saved as text files, but the new format changed that and I can't find the logs to delete them and start over. The transactions log displays by month so it is not a problem, but there is a display error. |

Anyone know how to reset the news and injury logs at the end of a season?

I'm concerned that the 2-year setting isn't working for you. That's intended to do just what you're desiring. Shot in the dark, but where are you in the season right now? If you've not rolled over yet (think that's Jan 1) then might try setting those to None and after the rollover, go to 2-year. That 'should' leave you empty on Jan 1-2, make the change, and then the 2-year data should start collecting.
That failing, which I hope it doesn't, I'll revisit the .dat files later tonight. Deja Bru has done a lot of experimenting with message.dat and others. He might have a thought as well, but that's my first off-the-cuff response to address it, Orc. Let me know.

The injury log is actually an html file stored in the news/html/leagues folder (first screen print). If you are handy with an html editor like SeaMonkey, you can delete rows from the bottom of the page, but not the very bottom of course, to reduce the file size (second screen print - the rows that you would be deleting are the nested tables inside the one big table that is the report itself, so be careful).
Back up the file before editing, of course. Why you should need to do this file editing is beyond me but it could be a workaround if you want to try.

The transactions files work the same way (first screen print). The files that get saved vary by the settings for what to save: All, 2 years, 10 years, or None. So, it looks like yours is set to All because I was able to reproduce your display error with that setting (second screen print).
Try toggling those settings back and forth and see if the game clears out some of these files. You can always try the html editing that I talked about above. I would not delete any files manually, however, as that could cause a file link error in the display.

Interesting stuff here. First of all, I was wrong above; you can delete some of the transactions files that you don't want anymore and the display will reset itself (first screen print).
But here's the thing. I deleted all the transaction files in the folder except for the one that is highlighted (second and third screen prints). Then, when I went back to the Transaction Logs screen and clicked each month, the game opened up and saved individual month transaction files (fourth screen print). And, for both June and December, it gave me the "Sorry, the page could not be opened with the in-game browser . . ." message (fifth screen print). See what it did in the file folder? Those two months have files but very small ones compared to the others (4KB). All of which shows me that this is working as intended and depends on those settings for "Keep news/injury/transaction logs" in Global Settings. NOTES: There could be an element of timing in this. First of all, the files don't seem to be updated unless you save or close the game. Second, there could be a reset mechanism for the display at Offseason or Preseason. I could try to pin it all down precisely, but I think you get the idea of how this works and how to go about getting it to do what you want. The display error is just a minor fault in the skin; if you keep too many reports (as in "All"), the selections will become too wide for the box. It seems to be working properly otherwise. Final note: Back up your game (or at least these files) before you do stuff like this!

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. This helps a lot. I will experiment and see what I can do. It's not like this is a game-breaker, but it would be nice to resolve it. |

do you have an older patch running? this was a 'fix' in one of the updates. changing the setting for news and such was bugged in some similar way, if not the same way.

What I did above was done on 17.11.72. Again, I don't think it's a bug, aside from that minor display issue.

I had this issue several times with a league I ran in OOTP 11-14ish (somewhere in there) and it wasn't so much a case of the files being "too big" or too many files, it was a case of that particular month being so long that it wouldn't display in the in-game browser. It usually happened to me in January, or April, or October because of all the transactions those months and the fact I was running a large league.
Anyway, point being, once you got to the next month, it worked fine again with the in-game browser.... until you got to a month with a lot of transactions again that made it too far to scroll down in the in-game browser and it would open with the external browser. Don't know if its the same with OOTP17, as I haven't had the issue yet with 17 (in fact, I haven't had it since I stopped that large league in OOTP 11 to 14-man my memory sucks I can't remember any closer than that lol)

This did work (thank you!), but it happened at the start of the pre-season instead of January 1. The new files did go back one year instead of being emptied, which is fine. |
