Contract extensions in reserve clause era

The reserve clause is enabled in my historical league. Contract extensions are allowed (up to 3 years max contract length).

The AI can, and does, give contract extensions.

The human player can not give contract extensions.

Why can't the human player give an extension if the AI can?

Is this a feature or a bug?

I wish the human player were able to negotiate future salaries with players (as in real life) instead of an arbitrary assignment by the AI on the first day of the offseason.

Obviously the human and AI should play by the same rules. So, yeah, seems like if there's an option that allows extensions, you should be allowed to give them to players.

I would point out that there wasn't much of that during the reserve clause era. At least, not nearly like negotiating in the free agency era.

The vast majority of contracts in the reserve clause era were for one year, and renewed on a yearly basis. Only a few players received multiyear contracts, and a similarly small proportion had their contracts guaranteed.

There were a variety of bonus clauses, however, that are no longer permitted to be given.

Thanks for the historical info. The issue is that the AI does give extensions and the human player is not allowed to do it. Since Matt commented on the issue, I am hopeful that it can be addressed in the next patch.
