Here is my history by game version. It really shows the improvement in the game since V10. Only 9 of my 27 WS since then.
Didn't play this league in V11 or V13.

OP: if you make the playoffs that much and have that few WS, maybe you construct your team too much for the regular season and not enough for the playoffs?
i'd look at what you are doing and think of a small tweak... something that will sacrifice a couple wins in the regular season but may make you stronger as a playoff team when you don't have to worry about resting players. winning in the regular season isn't as important as the playoffs... you should only make your team good enough relative to the regular season to make the postseason consistently -- ie some depth is necessary but that money on your bench, end of pen or some vet in the minors is worthless in the playoffs. allocate rescources mostly for playoff roster. you consistently win, so your talent evaluation is good to go. i'd also look at the +/- with your current coach if you have had him long enough... maybe he has poor strats. look at richw's SS... it's short so this could be wrong, but using it as an example.... he's -50 wins after ~100 years, give or take. with a better stategy over that entire time he could be +100 or more after 100 years. i average more than a +2 per year. i've had to adjust it over a couple versions, but you can do it each year -- find a strategy that wins more than others with the same talent. this wont mean anything signigicantly different would occur, but at least you feel more confident that you have a good strategy when you win as much or more as you should when scoring/pitching as well as you have. ie you're not shooting yourself in the foot as often. the type of team you construct will influence the strategy you choos ofc. however, the defensive stuff i'd be more consistent with. Strategy: e.g. with relevant modern mlb stats ai settings: reduce things that are high risk, like hit and run and run and hit... in fact run and hit should be zero or 1, imo. playing the infield in is a high risk... i don't attack that like run and hit, but i do drop it 1 below half. i do bump guard lines up 1... if i think the mlb does somethign too much i reduce it... i.e. shift setting at "Very OFten" is too much, i think... maybe... so i do 1 down.... i actually play with "often" as the setting, so i bump it 1-2 up. (coaches strat = bumps, not the stats ai settings) you may need different sets of strategies for various sets of players on your team. maybe you(any) frown on changing manager strategies.. i view it as a normal thing that heppens in real life... also, the manager is me regardless of my settings and having an AI coach, so i will make them do as i want, lol. you should be able to avoid negatives almost every year with a good strategy. screenshot: i actualyl had a + double digit and a 5 and a negative int he 3 years i played before i realized i fugged up some setting for the long-term... i could be averaging a better +/-. i want to exceed +2 / year... it's not a high goal by any means. it's not something i put a ton of time into either, but if i see a string of negatives when i update the game, i adjust and it tends to get back to somethign like this. the best way would be to systematically see what each does if you change one at a time... then apply them as you want and review how they work together at the new values... i've never gotten this serious, though. i see a consistent positive trend and i stick with it... that's all. i do change one at a time in general from my base as i adjust when results change (ie over 50+years, not a 3-5 year random pattern). I just paid $41.8 million for SS Addison Russell. He's a stud SS and hits for AVG and Power, a position we severely lacked last season.
Sheffield won his 4th Cy Young in a row (5 total) and we are still deep with pitching. Our owner finally gives me the cash to really make a push this season. |

any money rotting on your bench in the playoffs does you no good. you only need 3 studs, possibly a 4th SP if the best-3 are lower stamina guys (50% or 60% of your scale for stamina) and also depending on your postseason format and relevant settings.
if i spend more than a few million on my bench players it's a crazy year or some extenuating circumstances. speed and defense is cheap and useful on the bench. if i have a ph-type he's likely a platoon or a kid that can't quite crack the starting lineup, yet. if you have a couple suitable lead-off guys and 4 or more guys that can rake... that means you never have less that 1-5 rocking in your lineup and on most days 1-6, if you sub your guys for rest with a little forethought. the impact of the bench should be mitigated as much as possible. 1 at a time subs. knowing how positions fatige and at what rate helps. I lost a couple good players.. but I finally do have speed at the top of the lineup and power in the middle. My defense is better this season too, although it's never really been an issue.

The playoffs are 3 coin flips.
At best you are a 60/40 favorite 3 times in a row. Even at 130-32, you aren't winning the WS 90% of the time |

I believe my resolution is 1920x1200 as well
I play on a 17" laptop, but I do not think this has anything to do with it (size of my laptop/screen), because --- when I first purchased and played OOTP17 (about 2 months ago) my game showed the Standings in the upper right hand corner just the same as yours does in your screen shot, but about 2 weeks, the standings just disappeared, not to return. I thought maybe it had to do with an "update/patch" that OOTP pushed thru (I bought the game through Steam). Then I saw your screen shot and had to look at the date you posted it to see if it was current, so as to know if mine disappearing had anything to do with "patches/updates". Which if shows in your game and not in mine, I can kind of rule this possibility out. So, I do not think I changed anything in the game or in the resolution, but I will check what the current resolution is when I am back in front of my computer I really like this feature of immediately seeing the standings (and not having to take the extra steps of going to "MLB > Standings", so I hope I can get it back to displaying again |

just went into game settings (at the bottom of the start up screen) and played around with things. It turned out it was not the resolution setting it was actually the "Font Size" setting, I had mine at "maximum font size", any setting EXCEPT "maximum font size" shows the standings in the upper right hand corner. So I changed mine to "increased font size" (1 step lower) and the standings have returned ---- yeehaaa!

I think that explains why it's more difficult for the best teams to win in OOTP.

I FINALLY did it! After 12 seasons, 11 playoff appearances, we make it to the World Series in 2026 and win it all!!!
My contract was up in Cleveland and my dream job as GM of the St. Louis Cardinals was available and I took it! I LOVE this game!!!

have you increased text size? that will make less fit in under the same resolution... some screens change looks... e.g. front office will have a few less frames of info visible.
edit: oops, i thought i was on the last post... leaving it for %#$ and grins. so, i can say grats, anyway. now that i do se ethe last post. Last edited by NoOne; 02-17-2017 at 03:30 AM. |
