Who wins the MVP here?
Only 2 players really challenging for the MVP - i have no idea who the computer is going to award it to...
Honma's team won the world series despite a much worse team record than Kerr's. In fact Honma's team stunned Kerr's team in the Wilcard series 3-0. Kerr's WAR was 9.3; Honma 9.0. |

i view mvp as the best player in the league. between those two, i'd go with the one that sweeps the last bunch of stats that don't require converting to the same base games. 145 games is enough for me. I ignore the first 10-15 games off for the various reasons. after that i'd start weighting the more durable players more when comparing stats that are apples to apples (or apples to oranges converted to apples

If it helps, in real life the MVP voting takes place before the playoffs start, so whoever won the World Series wouldn't factor into the decision.
That said, I'd give the award to Kerr. Last edited by robert2; 08-15-2016 at 08:51 PM. |

I think Kerr was the better player over the course of the season. Unless he hit like a wet noodle in the wildcard series, or Honma personally hit twenty dongers on the way to the title, I'm not sure the playoff performance should make a difference.

Unless Kerr is a butcher of a defender at SS, while Honma is an excellent defensive 2B, I'd give it to Kerr as well.

I think the park factors would be important. If one plays in a pitcher's park and the other in a hitter's park, that would be information that would be pertinent.

I think OPS+ adjusts for parks, and Kerr wins that stat, too.

When in doubt go with the better hitter.
It would depend if Kerr was really bad defensively, but he's already the better hitter at a higher position. |

Just for historical context. Kerr has 7 golden gloves. Honma 1. So Kerr wins there too. Both have also won one mvp apiece.
I would think Kerr wins too. Except honma had a monster 2nd half and monster playoffs. I'm just salty. We lost the playoffs to Oregon after sweeping them in the last series of the season. I expected to win the title. |

While it would be nice to see the defensive metrics of each player it's really not crucial. WAR includes defensive as well as offensive information. Kerr with a 9.3 WAR and Honma with a 9.0 WAR gives you the victor if that is the criteria you wish to use.

WAR is a good tool for determining who is the better player, but not for who had the better season.

I think Kerr. The playoffs have no bearing on the MVP whatsoever.

Kerr has the superior rate stats, played enough games for me, and is close enough in some of the counting stats with a lot fewer at bats for me to vote for him hands down over Honma

Thanks for the feedback.
I'll post who the computer chooses when the selection gets made. I have another conundrum when it comes to the CY YOUNG. Neither are a player from my team. Player 1 is a 6 time Cy Young Winner as well as 3 time MVP winner. Player 2 is a journeyman pitcher who has never gained traction anywhere. Nana's stats clearly are better....but come on - doesn't sentiment come into play too at times? Wouldn't you give it to Franco? (Similar to how in the NBA - Jordan didn't win it every year - even though he should have - because we want to spread the wealth - and the Jordan fatigue). |

MVP= Kerr
Cy Young= Nana. Sentiment should never be the reason to give someone an award. |

Wow! Nana put up a 0.97 WHIP with a .309 BABIP. That has to be unprecedented. I know the huge strikeout total offsets the BABIP, but that's still crazy to have a BABIP that high and allow less than a runner per inning.

Player 1 for the Cy Young in a no-brainer blowout win.

No question Nana. Not even close.
Sorry Franco, I'm glad you had a career year, but it wasn't the best performance of the year.
