Errors!! #@#$(*
With a comfortable 6-2 lead and my best lefthanded starter Ron Guidry pitching a solid game, the normally sure-handed shortstop Greg Pryor boots a ball to put on a runner in the bottom of the 6th. I think to myself, "man I hate sloppy infield play...damn it Pryor!" but I don't sweat it as I figure Guidry will work around it pretty easily. Third sacker Eric Soderholm then throws the ball into the outfield trying to get the force out at 2nd. Then Soderholm throws ANOTHER one into the outfield on the very next play! Three errors in a row to load the bases!!!
With the bases now loaded, the Cubs send up some chump I've never heard of named Karl Pagel to pinch hit for the pitcher. Pagel sends the first pitch over the right field ivy for a pinch hit grand slam to tie up the game. Guidry is nearing 100 pitches, but it's 1980, so with the bases cleared, I'm going to leave him in to get his 3 outs and see if the offense can do something in the top of the 7th and maybe get him back in line for his 6th victory of the season. I'd pull Soderholm out of anger and spite for his sudden case of mid-game Steve Sax-itis, but he is my cleanup hitter and having a pretty nice season so far, slashing .320/.367/.481 with 8 homers and 29 ribbies in 206 at-bats, so maybe he can redeem himself with the stick in his next at-bat.
So, my question is, is there some button I can press to make my players have to come to the ballpark early tomorrow for some extra infield practice? We're at Wrigley and it's 1980, so they'd probably have to be there at 9 AM or so.... but I think they deserve *some* sort of punishment for this complete lack of fundamentals.
sigh.... back to the game. The Cubs aren't very good, so I'm thinking I can score some more runs on their bullpen.
