Converting from OOTP12 to OOTP17?

I’ve had the great pleasure of playing this wonderful game since OOTP4, and was formerly in the habit of updating my version every couple years (learned to wait a year after 2006/2007), but a busy personal and professional life seriously cut down on my play time, extending my seasons up to and often beyond a calendar year. Updating each year or even every other year just wasn’t feasible and I still gleaned so much enjoyment from older versions it was of little concern. Now that life has relaxed to the point of having more time for this incredible game, I’d very much like to experience all the wonderful features added since my last update. I’m currently running an OOTP12 solo league I began with 6.5, with 21 seasons simmed half inning by half inning I don’t want to abandon. Will it be possible for me to transition from OOTP12 to OOTP17 by importing my league through each subsequent version?

Yes, this is conceptually possible...if you have every version between 12 and 17. But I think this might be an opportunity to start over. Take it.

Download the demo for each version that you have missed and convert/save your league in each one all the way to OOTP17.

Thanks for responding, sir. Can you elaborate on why you recommend starting over? I have so much "emotionally" invested in the league
it would be painful to abandon it.

There is certainly the potential for file corruption during the process of four version upgrades. You might end up with a league you barely recognize or doesn't produce the results you expect.

But if the demos are available, as the download page here insinuates, then worst case is you spend an afternoon giving it a try.

Admittedly, I never transfer leagues between versions so I wouldn't really be an expert on pitfalls of the process.

i think the concerns are overblown. just create a copy of the league folder(as a backup), download all the demos and import away. it will probably take awhile. I'd recommend removing the jerseys/caps/logos/pictures/almanacs until you get to the 17 version. No way should you abandon your game!

I recommend checking some very important things at each upgrade.
I commished an online league that the file crashed and burned through upgrades. We upgraded each version from 7-16, I know they used other versions before 7.
1) Check player histories in their profiles. I have had to hand copy 200+ player history .txt files to fix missing history problems. This has happened in 2 league I know of.
2) Check managers/manager histories. I have seen all managers erased in an update.
3) Check your HoF. I have had retired players wiped from the game and we lost 20 years of HoFers from our league.
4) Once you get to 17 I would make a full back up. You can then sim forward and if you find something broke you can start over.
I also think it is worth the time and energy to keep your current league running. Good luck!

I've converted leagues over multiple versions. Just give each conversion a run-thru to see if everything worked ok. I had one where pitcher's control ratings all seemed to plummet each year mysteriously, but I did the conversion over again and it cleared that up.

I think the best advice is to make backups at each step, check the progress at each step, and don't delete 12 from your computer, just in case.

If it were me, I'd make a backup of my original league (of course), then restore a new league from that backup and that would be the league I'd convert. I'd also keep a copy of my league files somewhere not on my computer, such as a thumb drive or external hard drive. And tats purely because you have so much invested in the league, I'd hate to see anything irrecoverable happen to it (just ask our good friend Eugene Church in the dynasty forum)

I've had a league runnibg from v4 and have converted it all the way to 17 now. I know a few versions gave me runtime errors but since 16 it's been crash free. Just get the demos and convert. It may take a long time though depending on the age of the league
