[league redacted] League Roster project

Ok, I am currently in the process of making a roster set for the Japanese [league redacted]. Initially I was just going to use team names and fictional players just to play a different league than the normal MLB. Then I decided if I am going to do that then why not go the whole hog and make a proper roster set as there doesn't seem to be one out there other than a 1998 set someone convered from Diamond Mind Baseball. So I have taken the plunge and started. I would like to release it into the community once it's finished if there is a desire for it.

What's it definitely going to have?...

Full Rosters for all 12 *** teams including around 25 minor leaguers with each team. (They have two farm leagues) They will all be accurate rosters as of 2002 season, including correct date of birth, height, weight and shirt number as well as throw/bat handedness.
Real stadium pics for all teams
Salaries lowered as best I can to reflect the slightly lesser skill levels.
Accurate batting and pitching ratings taken from 2002 stats.
Accurate stadium capacities, field sizes and wall heights.
All managers accurate as of 2002 season

What else am I aiming to get in it?...

Accurate ERA settings to reflect real *** stats (much lower triples totals for example)
Maybe two releases. One with minor leagues off and all players not in 25 man roster put into the free agency pile. The other with all teams having around 50 players and minors on.

I have so far got two teams rosters complete and batting and pitching ratings completed for each player on their roster as well.

Depending on how much free time I get will depend on how long this project will take. I don't know how much demand there will be for them but I aim to do the best job I can on them.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Also one thing I am struggling to find out is the actual fielding positions of the players as all I can currently break them down into is infielder or outfielder as that is all the rosters are broken down into. Catchers are seperate and Pitchers I can work out from innings pitched and games played and saves. Fielders however have nothing other than IF or OF. If anyone can read Japanese and could see whether the Japanese site has their actual positions and could help me there it would be much appreciated.

Go to this site ... <a href="http://games1.cdmsports.com/cgi-bin/sports/research/stats.p?szUser=&szPrefix=mj&szDayOfWeek=0">Japanes e Fantasy Baseball</a>.

It has a database of 2002 statistics, sortable by positions, and you can have it show you all players at each position. If you could copy the data and paste it into an Excel spreadsheet, and then sort it by name, this might help you to identify all the primary players positions in the Japanese league. I will continue searching for helpful links.

Great work on this roster idea. I would certainly experiment with the rosters, and I would imagine that a few people would be interested in starting a Nippon online league of their own.

Another great link ... this will provide you with downloadable spreadsheets of complete batting and pitching statistics from the Japanese league, dating back to 1992. Unfortunately, player positions are not included.

<a href="http://baseballguru.com/jalbright/stats.html">Japanese Baseball Statistics Database</a>

Also, go out to the Jim Albright main page to find invaluable information that explains the Japanese system, along with all sorts of other details.

Sim Rat, thank you for the great links. I have tried to put together a Japanese database on a couple different occassions, but the lack of full stats kept holding me back. Thanks to your links, a database can easily be assembled from 1992-2002.

I believe I have the stats from 1992-2001 already in Lahman 4.5 form. I was in the process of creating a complete database but the inability of being able to find accurate fielding stats already in some kind of spreadsheet form made me abandon the project. So I just tried to find include most of the 'stars' so they would import along with other players during my historic replays.

Not exactly related...

Hey sttfrk, fellow Milwaukeean here. Glad to see I'm not the only baseball fan in town...hello? is this thing on?

I've been contemplating putting together another real "alternative league" in the form of amateur Cuban baseball. Obviously information has been hard to come by, though I've found some links that could be helpful, if anyone was interested, in creating a real database. But in the meantime I use the imperfect Lnames files to generate players and coaches, have the real team and league structure and crude logos, and got all the ERA settings and park factor tweaked (one park league, TigerFan-esque style) just right to closely resemble the 2001-02 national series, but was faced with having an all-DH league, financials off, no trading or free agency, the potential to include defections, bans for gambling, and US Government-led disdain for my attempts to bridge our nations

The clubs supply their teams with players from their geographical region, and I'm sure it's complete political and social unrest when they redraw lines...baseball is a religion over there. I also wondered about the possibility of including all-stars in international competitions and defectors (drawn randomly as a "career-ending injury" or as forced retirement) persuing MLB careers with other created universes. Haven't worked out the details of how to get this to work as I'm new to the game, and somehow my game no longer works.

Anyway, it's good to see this stuff happening, Matt. I know I'm interested in your Japanese baseball.

Great to see there's some interest in this. Will check out those two sites. All I managed to find on the *** site, position wise, were box scores from the Japan Series (the World Series equivalent) Which only had the players from Seibu Lions and Yomiuri Giants and then only those who actually got a game, so that is one area I was really struggling with. Those sites sound like they should help immensely with that.

Never having downloaded the Lahman database (am doing that now), I was curious as to the layout so that I could look into duplicating it for Japanese stats (Assuming I could find more than the two seasons at ***) So that now seems an option. I had initially been inputting manually names etc and manually changing the player ratings by using the 2002 stats as a guide to the players abilities. Presumably the Lahman format can contain as many years as you input and the game will read it all in? I am assuming you input it from the option in free agency and then allocate the players to the relevant teams?

Thanks all for the assistance. What a great community this place is.

Simrat, thanks for the sites. I have now got all the infielders into a spreadsheet by position. Now to sort them alphabetically and cross reference them with the roster spreadsheet to find out who the hell they play for!

Unfortunately outfielders are still listed as such and not broken down into LF,CF,RF. Obviously a lot can play two or more of those but I don't want to give them all the ability to play at each position and would like not to just guess. I found a Japanese newspaper in English that had an overview of the 2002 season and it listed a few key players in each team and did give LF etc so I have a few correct but most are still at this stage unknown outfielders. If anyone else can find any site with the outfielders listed by actual position shown it would be a great help. I think though that this may only be found on a Japanese site.

Ok, back to work on the spreadsheets to get these infielders positions into the roster spreadsheet.

I am currently putting the Japanese info into Lahman's format by overwriting it which is working fine when making an historical league in OOTP. I have finished one team in Lahman format and that loads into the game correctly.

However I am having trouble making the game recognise the Japanese teams. I assume the files, team.csv and teammaster.csv are the two to change but I am following the info already in the MLB downloaded file but the game is not recognising it for some reason and what is happening is that the players from the team I have finished are going into free agency and the league standing screen shows the MLB 30 teams in their present format. This despite deleting any reference to MLB teams in the team and teammaster csv files. Can anyone throw any light on this at all?

Was this project ever completed?

If so, does anyone know where it is posted?

Thanks.

Any idea how accurately that league started? Was the original roster fictionally generated? Because if it's fairly accurate, it'd be a great place to start.
