Poor player ratings in historical game
I've started two historical games, one in 1994 and another in 2004 and in both I've noticed that the player ratings seem very low.
When looking for starting pitchers with at least 13/20 for stuff, movement and control I can only find 2 in 2004 and couldn't find any in 1994. When doing the same search in a standard MLB game in 2016 I get 28 pitchers. Also, when looking for center fielders, there are only 6 in the whole game (MLB and minor leagues) with a fielding rating of at least 13. In 2016 there are 77 players. These are the settings I used to set up my historical games: Import real minor leagues Base potential ratings on - remaining peak season base fielding ratings on - 3 year period base pitcher stamina on - 3 year period generate random L/R splits adjust hitters with fewer than 200 at bats weaken hitters with fewer than 50 at bats adjust pitchers with fewer than 25 innings weaken pitchers with fewer than 10 innings Use talent ratings and OOTP development engine I also set scouting level to normal. Have I done something wrong in the set-up of my game and do I just need to get used to looking at lower ratings? Thanks. |

The ratings are all lower in a historical game, but they are relative to the other players. The performance will be normal. Using the 20-80 scale makes the ratings look more realistic, i.e. 50 is average.

Thanks Orcin.
I'm used to using the 1-20 scale for ratings. If I continue to use this, can I assume 10 is average in the same way 50 is average in the 20-80 scale? Thanks |

I have also noticed that the player ratings in historical leagues are also lower, compared to what I remember in OOTP '16. I typically start a franchise in the 1986-1989 era so I am pretty well-versed with player ratings from that time period. In particular, pitching ratings seem to be lower, especially with the "stuff" rating in OOTP '17.
At the same time, I have not noticed anything unusual statistically and everything seems normal in the sims that I have played through in the most recent OOTP game. I have also found in my experience not to read too much into the player ratings; while they can provide you a general sense of what a player's current/potential ability might be, they are not always reliable and indicative of how a player will perform. |

Has anyone noticed the ratings for Juan Gonzalez? Hes always rated as a 1 1/2 star, but I dont see how that is because he was a really good hitter.

The Standard MLB uses ratings concocted by humans and the historical MLB uses ratings concocted by computer. It might be nice one day to get the two rating systems to agree but that day is not yet. As each system is relative to itself the results are within tolerance.
Historical ratings cover 1871-2015 which means todays players are compared to everyone but the standard game is one year only.
