Cubs Trade Rizzo for Price
... in my MLB Quick Start. Then they traded Hammels for Mike Napoli to replace Rizzo at 1B.
I think they significantly weakened their offense in return for a slight upgrade in pitching, plus they got older with the deals. Since the move, they have slipped in the standings and my Cards are now tied with them. Why do you think the AI would do this? The Cubs did not have budget problems. Morale and personality are turned off in this league. |

If you looked at that move before the season started, I think you could justify it. As the real life season has played out (Price underperforming, Lackey/Hammel/Hendricks overperforming), it looks a bit stupid. But in an alternate universe, Price could have a 3 ERA and Lackey/Hammel/Hendricks could have a 5 ERA.
I think the basis is that on paper, the Cubs rotation does not look the great. |

Price is not a "slight upgrade" on Hammel, not if ratings are based on 2015.

Is Price enough better than Hammels to justify trading Rizzo for him (and replacing him with Napoli)?

I think in a vacuum this trade is fine. I agree it isn't very realistic because the Cubs probably wouldn't trade Rizzo or Bryant IRL. |

I think you are right. It's your last point that made me question it, but I have to remember that game AI doesn't see names. |

![]() That would be one heck of a rotation, especially in the playoffs of Price/Lester/Arrieta. |

I also looked at the Cubs' stats, and their pitching is so-so in my league because Arietta is only a normal good pitcher. Their offense is #1 in the league, so this move corrects a deficiency by dealing from strength. |

You know.. it's funny. In my MLB universe I started with OOTP 16 and the 2015 rosters. Price was a FA at the end of 2015 and the Cubs signed him to a 5 year deal.
He lead the league in wins, going 17-12 that season. St. Louis won the division and Chicago won a WC spot, but lost to the Dodgers. During that 5 year span, they made the playoffs all 5 seasons with Price, winning the central 4 out of those 5 years. He retired in 2020 after rupturing a finger tendon. They never did make it to the World Series though. |
