Should I Make A Qualifying Offer?
Playing as the Yankees and this summer I was planning on making a qualifying offer to Carlos Beltran, but likely letting him go for a compensation pick. However, he kind of screwed up my plan by tearing a ligament.
He batted .285/.332/.543 this season in 53 games with 16 HR and 39 RBI. Solid numbers. But it is now August 27th and he will be out for another 9 months. If I make the qualifying offer, maybe he rejects it, but if he accepts it, I'm saddled with a 40-year old with poor fielding who will be out until mid-June. What should I do?

What's his current salary? That has a lot to do with his perception of the qualifier.

From what you say, my guess is that he'd accept the QO. So really, if you're willing to accept him on the QO salary, then give the offer. If you're not willing to take that chance, then don't.

The qualifying offer is something like $16mil for one season. I would NOT want to pay him that for half a season, but I also covet picks.

Ask yourself, "What is the most Yankees thing I could do?"
Obviously it's to sign him to a three-year, $50 million extension.

Let one of your other DHs (assuming stock Yankees roster) take that role next season, as there's almost no chance you would get a pick for him. |
