Pitchers hitting with DH

is there a way to have a pitcher hit instead of having a DH on days that they pitch such as what the giants have done with Mad Bum

If you play your game out, you can remove your DH during the lineup selection screen before the game. Then, move your position players so that 8 of 9 lineup spots are covered - the pitcher will bat in the 9th (which does not has to be the 9th, if you let batters bat 1-3 and 5-9, pitcher will bat 4th)

However you know that Mad Bum usually bats only because all NL starting pitchers bat? I really doubt they let him DH, except in a emergency during an interleague game - but seeing that every possible batter will usually be better than even him as DH...

thanks. and i know thats why he usually bats. but in at least one IL game last year he hit in his spot when they could have had a DH.

Does not look that way. Only pinch-hits, which are rare for a pitcher too, but more achievable. (you have "just" to be either the best option after other players were already used, or be used because the opportunity is not good enough to waste a better PH, while DHing you pretty much have to be the best batting option on the bench - unlikely, maybe if all stars with injury, platoon splits etc. align)

Bumgarner's was the first time that's happened since 1976. As mentioned if you play out your games you can do it manually, but it's so incredibly rare.

You forgot about Rick Rhoden in 1988. Billy Martin batted Rhoden 7th on June 11th against the O's. He was 0-1 with a sac-fly.

Looks like that one's different - Rhoden wasn't actually the starter for the game, he was simply put as the DH for the game.

BASEBALL
BASEBALL; RHODEN PITCHES IN: A DESIGNATED HITTER
By JOE SEXTON
Published: June 12, 1988

Rick Rhoden spent the early afternoon yesterday trying on protective helmets and looking for a bat that felt right. The search, marked by laughter and a little nervousness, was necessary because Rhoden arrived at Yankee Stadium to find himself in the batting order. And as the designated hitter, no less.

''The man told me to go out there, so I'm going out there and do the best I can,'' said Rhoden, who was the losing pitcher less than 24 hours earlier in a 5-3 loss to the Orioles. ''I can hit, but it ain't that easy when you haven't done it in a long time.''

He started as the No. 7 batter in the lineup in the Yankees' 8-6 victory. He grounded to third against Jeff Ballard in the third inning in his first turn at bat. In his second time up, he drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field that tied the game at 3-3. Jose Cruz pinch-hit for him in the fifth.

''I was glad to make contact,'' Rhoden said later. ''And the second one I hit pretty good.''

According to research performed by the front office of the Yankees, it was the first time since the inception of the designated hitter 15 years ago that a pitcher had started a game as the d.h.

Manager Billy Martin explained the unusual lineup move tersely. He said he had raised the possibility of doing something like this in spring training, and that injuries to his lineup left him with limited options.

When asked if he didn't think several of his left-handed hitters such as Claudell Washington, Mike Pagliarulo and Cruz wouldn't fare better against the left-handed Ballard, Martin responded:

''If they would or could hit this guy, they'd be the designated hitter and not Rhoden. This pitcher throws curves and slow curves. The book says they can't hit this guy.''

Asked whether he planned any more regular batting practice, Rhoden said: ''I might start now. I don't want to be caught by surprise again.''

Ah you are right... I have to say I was sort of confused by the thread.

I often wonder why the MLB DH rules are different than the NCAA rules, where in the NCAA the pitcher and the DH are "different" players. So a pitcher would be the SP and the DH, so when he was taken out of the game as a pitcher he would remain as the DH.
