A Lot of Players Injured for Season

I am noticing that many of my fictional league players are out for the season, and this has been happening in each season.

My fictional league plays from June 1st until August 31st and is a total of 80 game season. I realize it's a shortened season, but I also think that there then should be less injuries (since the players are not playing at much).

Right now, I am half-way through the season (42 games in). There are 24 teams. The league has 21 players that will be out for the remainder of the season.

Does this seem normal? I don't mind players getting injured, but each year 2 or 3 league All Stars are usually out.

Would this be in line with a real 3-month 80 game baseball season?

Thanks!

Seems about right. Especially if you only have an 80 game season.

How many players miss a typical MLB season or half season? Any place to find typical injury stats for MLB?

Google "mlb current DL" and you will see various sites listing current DL. I think the average team already has 3 or 4 players on the 60 day DL. Some teams have about 7 players on the 60 day DL. It amazes me how many players miss significant time due to injuries.

Yeah, I think we all think injuries are underestimated in our minds.

Out of curiosity, what do you have your injury setting set to in the game? If it's really bothering you, drop it down to low, and that should give you less injuries overall (and consequently less SEI).

The original question was regarding season ending injuries. I also think OOTP has this occurring more frequently that previous versions of the game. It does seem to happen to all teams though, so it is "fair" in that regard.

Actually, while he mentioned SEIs, his statement was "I also think that there should then be less injuries".

Regardless, my statement stands. For whatever reason, people always seem to think there's less injuries (including SEIs) in baseball than there actually are, until you look at the data.

OOTP is doing fine. Realistic Modern Day setting is actually realistic.

since the season is much shorter then the usual 162 games, injuries that are labled "out for rest of season" will be more frequent. not necessarily because everyone needs TJS, but because it takes smaller injuries to qualify (same as in 162 game league when they are nearing the end of season)

Can you change the schedule to play 80 games over the same length of time an MLB season is played?

I once

had 6 starters on the 60 day d/l at once (162 gm season). Then again, in another sim, I went 2 seasons without anyone going on the 60 day d/l. It's a challenge.

I understand that this may happen - i.e. shorter season so more "season ending injuries since a 3-month injury would end the season in my fictional league.

What I would like to happen instead, is that in a typical season in real MLB there is a certain percent a players who miss the entire season on average, then I would like that same proportion to apply to my league.

My theory is that if a player is playing less ball, they would likely recover more quickly and also be less susceptible to injuries that are cumulative in nature.

If that is your theory then you should probably lower the injury frequency when playing a shorter league.

I mean the A's in real life have five SPs on the DL right now, I think - Sean Manaea, Henderson Alvarez, Jarrod Parker, Felix Doubront and Chris Bassitt - four of whom are almost certainly done for the year, along with three relievers (Triggs, Doolittle, Rodriguez). The Dodgers have four SPs (plus another 40-man SP) on the DL (Kershaw, Wood, Ryu, Anderson and Montas), along with five relievers (Tsao, Ravin, Fien, Hatcher, Garcia). SD has four SPs on the DL. It's just not all that rare to lose a sizeable fraction of a starting rotation during a season.

There are a few problems I've mentioned elsewhere, but on 'realistic modern day', OOTP injuries are calibrated fairly well. On the default, injuries are low compared to real life (but seem high to a lot of people, which is fine, people should set things up the way they like).

I'm half going by memory with the lists of players above so one or two names might be wrong.
