Any older Royals fans out there?? (franchise idea)
We're talking LaCock, the Toothpick, A.O., The Duke, KBMA 41 away games and all?
I am finally comfortable with a franchise idea! Yeah, I bailed on the "Devastating" draft I had. It wasn't all it was cracked up to be and I just can't get a feel for Musial and Reg-gie and others in a Royals uni. So...here's what I am gonna do. I am going back to my childhood and having a real 1979 Royals franchise. I will be GM, setting the lineup and pitching rotation, making trades and other things here and there. Herzog will still manage with my tweaks to strategy. This is the real 1979 season so no interleague, no wild card, etc. Plus my life is still as busy as when I first tried a Royals franchise so my season might lag a bit, but I have some ideas that might make it a little more fun. Hopefully, if there are any Royals fans as old as I (47), they will get a nostalgic feeling like I have. Thanks for your time, gang. See you as soon as I can! |

I'm certainly not a fan of the current Royals, but what great teams they ran out in that decade... George Brett is sadly remembered for the silly pine tar game, and I think a lot of the other great players are just plain forgotten outside KC. I think of all the guys in that period though, Darrell Porter, John Mayberry, and even the ex-heroes finishing out their careers like Cookie Rojas and Vada Pinson. Sustained excellence, bringing in vets here and there to complement the crazily-productive farm system.
Also, I think people have forgotten some of these cross-country rivalries that used to happen with a balanced schedule. Of course the Yankees-Royals one was the big deal, but I recall OAK-KC being pretty heated too as KC was on their way up and Charlie Finley sold off his team. Now unless division rivals play in the postseason, it's pretty hard for any rivalry to carry over from season to season with only home-and-home series. |
