Apparently I am not good GM

at the end of my very first season I was given a grade of 17 out of 100
(1st time have ever played OOTP in any version)

just looked at the "Pre-Season predictions" and the computer predicts that my team will finish 57-105 and 7th (out of 7) in my division. My owner expects/wants me to make the playoffs this year. Personally, I think I will be competing for 1st place in my division, so we will see who is the better judge of talent --- me believing I have set the team up for success or the computer which feels I will not even win 60 games

Playing a Historical sim with my Fav team the Baltimore Orioles started in 1983 where they (Orioles) where 1st in their division and also won the World Series. Now I have just begun the 1984 season. I am making trades, signing free agents and such, so this is not a "strictly" Historical sim where I use the exact same rosters from year to year as they did IRL

I did not do as well in 1983 as they did IRL BUT injuries and me trying to place my own stamp on the team had a lot to do with this

BUTTTT I really feel I have set this team up for a very long stretch of dominance and hopefully many titles, which I think could start as earlier as next season (1985) as far as being a bonafide World Series contender.

Personally, I have learned (am still learning) to take the highs with the lows in this game and to disregard the stupid rating thing at the end of the season.

I've seen teams swept in the first round of the playoffs after winning 100 regular season games. I've seen "can't miss" ball clubs suddenly laid low with a bunch of injuries. I've seen teams go from last to first in one season and back down again.

Just like IRL, winning takes talent, timing. . . and luck. Most of the time, one of those things is missing.

But, I have won occasionally. And when I do, it's special. Unless you are stacking the deck in your favor, winning is hard in this game. Just like IRL.

So, I take the bad with the good and the good with the bad. Or at least I try.

That is why I use the "Cannot be Fired" option, even though I know I am safe in my job some of the comments and ratings doing upset me (a little thin skinned?).

This game is amazing with its depth, but as in the post above luck and timing are big factor, as in real life, in any success for a team.

the key is you set yourself up for a long-period of time... always have an idea of what's happening over the next 3-5-7 years on your roster.. always have multiple options for future changes, like that aging first baseman or that "kid" you know you cannot afford as a FA due to the core of players you've signed long-term expensive contracts before he entered the picture...

flexibility through numerous options... not always possible but it is a 'best' practice. pay your scout well. give yourself the best information possible for decisions. trust ratings and don't have knee-jerk reactions to small-sample statistical results of any 1 year.

i've seen a player underperform for their entire prime years... it's disappointing but likely just the result of a bad-luck lottery. this guy had a good personality, too. if it can happen, it will eventually. don't be fooled by it.

Quoting myself just so people will know what i am referring to.

Well, season has just completed and the results show that it was the computer and not me who was wrong finished with a record of 90-72 2nd place 4 games back (so much for the computers prediction of 57 wins), after the previous years record of 87-75. I did feel that the team should have been better, but the injury bug hit really hard lost 3/5's of my starting rotation all at the same time and all with stays on the DL 60 days plus+. In the second half, so the last 2 months all I could manage was .500 baseball and the Tigers during that same stretch played 4 games better than me, and took 1st place over me by these same 4 games.

oh, this year I was given a 57 out of 100 which it stated was a good score.

Lets see what happens this year, personally I think the team is set up to take it all, only time will tell
