I'm really enjoying OOTP 17 (on Linux in my case) but as I start exploring some simple replay seasons or looking into fantasy sims, I wonder if a "next gen" version of the game is in the works? We are in the age of cloud computing with state of the art dev environments (Angular, Go, etc) bringing desktop power to browsers.
Does it really make sense to support 3 separate platforms with OpenGL and all the variations, bugs and issues that go with it - all this with a very small development team? Other software categories have morphed (Salesforce, Amazon AWS, etc). Why not support one basic web-enabled version and go the subscription route? The stability of running just one code base would be so much easier.
I really never did "get" the why of OpenGL and animated graphics in what is essentially a stats-based game. I even see job postings for graphics programmers when what I'd be hiring is statisticians and/or data scientists

.
I started by sim'ing as a kid with strat-o-matic, cards and dice. I'm approaching OOTP the same way - eye candy doesn't really matter too much beyond a decent color scheme that doesn't suck too much.
I work with software, so maybe I'm just biased, but I see a lot of potential for a web-based version to take off and better fit a "small coding team" than supporting lots of complicated hardware variations.
Just my two cents. Might happen soon or maybe never, but seems the way to go to me. Either way though, its the best sim out there at the moment, so kudos!
