Guess this Hall of Famer

I hope his attorneys don't hear of this :-). Playing a fairly standard real-player game with 2016 rosters etc. In 2030, a player (currently active in real life) made the Hall of Fame. In the write-up, the game said the following:

"His hard-partying youth led to addiction and other personal problems. 'I did not like myself, and I tried to use alcohol as a means to run away from my problems ... It amazes me now that I was still able to play ball at a high level during that time.'"

Can you guess the player?

My initial guess would be C.C. Sabathia, but if you're using the standard 10 years on the ballot then he would have had to play until 2020, and I don't know if that's reasonable or not.

To be honest though the description sounds tailor-made for Johnny Manziel.

Hamilton seems like the obvious guess, but I have a hard time thinking he would get to HoF numbers starting where he is now.

I'll guess someone on the other end of the spectrum, like Albert Pujols.

10 years on the ballet is correct, but you need to be out of the game 5 years. So this "player" would have retired as early as 2015 (5 out, 10 on the ballot) or as late as 2025 (5 out).

That being said, David Ortiz is my guess.

Those are all great guesses. And the write-up is pretty extreme, whoever it is. What makes it classic is that I can't think of many players for whom it isn't likely to be true in real life.

It's Buster Posey.

That's about the last person I would have guessed.

Good catch, forgot about that.

And yeah Buster Posey was definitely not someone I expected at all.

To sum up, here are how the various players listed above turned out:

Josh Hamilton had a minor comeback in 2017, but only played 64 games after that. In his first and only appearance on a HoF ballot, he got 0.7% of the votes.

Sabathia's career ended after 2016. He's coming up on his final year on the Hall ballot, and won't get in.

Miguel Cabrera played until he was 40, had 541 HR and 3376 Hits. He got in the Hall on his first ballot (98.3%).

Pujols played (and mostly sucked) a few more years. Finished with 590 HR, and also got into the Hall on his first ballot (98.5%).

Ortiz made it into mid-2018 before he was released. Hit 564 HR, and was yet another first-ballot Hall guy (94%).
