how to edit a player's stats?

You mean ratings or stats? I don't think you can edit stats.

If you mean ratings, you have to be in commissioner mode in settings.

You can, but depending when you do it can cause some oddities in game.

Game settings. Export player stats.
Go into that saved game, into the import export file, you will see a batting, fielding and pitching stats.
Open what you need to and change. Save.

Back to game settings, Import player stats.
They are in.

I have found that if you import after the start of a game, the import will lose all the playoff stats, plus any split or advanced stats, keeping only the basic what is found in the files.
I do it only with new games before the first season starts...but works fine, with no problems at all at that time,.

i've edited a few of my Negro League players stats just as sprague suggested. one thing to be careful of is to make certain you get each bit of data in the correct slots. and follow the directions .... only import those files you've exported for that specific league. i didn't once in a test league and the results were pretty ugly. And by all means, do it in the off season. otherwise, it works well.

Open those files in Excel or another spreadsheet program, edit them, and save them as .csv files then re-import them into the game. Easiest way to do it. But like others have said, don't do it during the season; otherwise, you'll lose postseason stats.
