Help me name a team for Lubbock, Texas
I am nearly done with remaking the professional baseball universe in time for expansion to 36 teams by 2025. There are just two new teams that I am having trouble coming up with nicknames for, so I thought I'd open it up to a vote.
This poll is for a Texas League expansion team that will begin play in Lubbock, Texas in 2027. I have come up with four finalists. Here they are, in alphabetical order: Hollies - Lubbock is perhaps best famous as being the home of many musicians, chief among them Buddy Holly. I can see his trademark glasses lending itself well to a logo and mascot possibilities. Plus, Rivers Cuomo could throw out the first pitch at a game. Hubbers - Lubbock baseball's traditional nickname, but it seems really old-fashioned and not something I could see being used today. Still, I thought I'd add in into the poll. It comes from the fact that Lubbock's nickname is the "Hub City" because it is the center of everything in the west Texas plains. Knights - Lubbock is the home of Texas Tech University, the final stop of Bob Knight's coaching career. This is a subtle nod to the massive presence of both Texas Tech and The General in Lubbock, without being too obvious like Red Raiders. Weevils - The Lubbock area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world. Boll Weevils are a well-known cotton pest, and this would be a tip to the major economic driver in Lubbock. Those are the choices. Please vote, and if you wish to leave a comment explaining your decision, I would find that very helpful as well. Thanks!

Like the idea of the glasses and mascot. Hollies will have the best unis in the league and also could have good between innings music.

If it wins, I'd definitely need some help in making the uniforms be all they can be...

OOPS!... I'm too late... still will suggest them.
I voted for Hollies... I'm a big Buddy Holly fan... he made the city well-known... Hubbers is a good name... and I think they were a pretty good minor league team at one time. Lubbock is a one of the largest cotton-growing areas in the US... also the hometown of rock legend Buddy Holly and the Crickets and country/pop star and songwriter Mac Davis... city is also located in the Texas plains. Lubbock Cotton Kings Lubbock Plainsmen Lubbock Rockers Lubbock Legends Lubbock Crickets Lubbock Rockabillies (Holly was little bit rockabilly... a little rock and country combined... Mac Davis was, too) The Beatles chose their name because of Buddy Holly and the Crickets... they played off the word "beetle" for the insect and "beat" as in the musical term 'beat". So I think I'm ready to call this one. I liked the idea of naming the team after Buddy Holly, but I didn't really like the name "Hollies". So, remembering that Buddy Holly's band was called the Crickets, I've decided to go "off script" and name the team the Lubbock Crickets. The mascot will be a cartoon cricket wearing Buddy Holly glasses.
So, who's up for the challenge of designing it? ![]() P.S., now I see that Eugene also came up with the name Crickets, too.

So there actually is/was a Lubbock Crickets...and their logo is the poster child for missed opportunities. No Buddy Holly references anywhere.

Me too. Maybe I can find an Alabama or Mississippi team who can use it.
The old Mississippi Braves were looking for a new name in my universe after Atlanta switched their affiliation to another team. But then I thought of the Mississippi Oysters, because they play in Pearl, Miss. That's too punny for me to give up. So minor league.

Biloxi now has a team with the nickname Shuckers... a beautiful new stadium right on the Gulf Coast beach within one block of the beautiful Beau Rivage casino... made a trip there last summer. The only negative... minor leagues are now costing too much for admission... $11-14 in Biloxi... that's too much for a minor league game. But my story gets worse... the cost of major league games... the best price you can get is $15-$20 for the nosebleed sections... hotel prices are out-of-sight, too. My adorable wife... a real baseball fan, who can keep a great detailed scorebook like a real pro... and I are going to try to go to each major league park before we go to the happy hunting grounds... we only have about 9 stadiums left... sometimes this summer we will spend two weeks going to Minneapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Toronto. And the Good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise, we will head to Washington and Miami next year and complete this MLB project. Last edited by Eugene Church; 06-03-2016 at 11:24 AM. |
