One other culprit to slow sim times

Your mileage may vary but i was having trouble with my sim times in my large universe. I tested everything and finally found out the culprit. Normally I think it's ok if you have large free agent pools and I only had about 1800 in the pool but when you combine that with 22 leagues that causes major issues in processing time (I was in offseason). I'm guessing teams check the pool every single day and this slowed my sim times drastically. I then deleted the scrub FAs and kept the ones that were actually demanding money and it reduced it to 136. Voila my sim times are now blazing fast again.

Would this work if you retired them instead of deleting them?

I would say yes since it accomplishes the same thing (getting them out of the FA status). I don't do that since I have it set to delete players who don't make the majors.

if you "delete those that do not make the majors" you should purge your dB every ~20 to ~50 years or so... Deleting them does not remove the db entry. only purging deleted entries will speed you back up.

League settings -> Database Settings - "purge" in dropdown box of "available actions"

who you choose to keep of retired players can help too. some want all the history, so it may not be an option for you. you could delete all batters retired with less than "100" ab or whatever. becareful, i'm not sure if you'd delete their accomplishments or records along with them... i'd jsut keep all the ones that made the MLB if you are a stickler at all about somethign like that. But, a purge must be done to clean up the db and decrease access times and such.

maybe the act of reducing the FA pool helps a bit, too. it would help with any decision that has to mull through that data - like opening up the FA list. make sure you 'retire' them and not delete them.

Just a quick update to this problem. After further testing it's clear that when you combine a situation when you have multiple leagues that have access to your FA pool (in my case 14 leagues, over 150 teams) and have a large FA pool (1000-3000) it considerably slows down processing team whether you are in off season or regular season. However here are some workarounds that may or may not work for you.

1. I turned off minor league free agency. This cuts down on the player list a lot. I figure arbitration and the rule 5 draft will help will still give young players a chance to move teams.

1. turned off "allow FA from other leagues" in my lesser leagues during the offseason. I still allow my two major leagues full access to the FA pool but during the offseason I only allow my lesser intl and indy leagues access to their own FAs and this helps a lot. I then turn it back on in March when the intl leagues start playing and in April for the Indys when they start. Yes it cuts down on interleague movement but I figure in real life intl players will either sign with their own league or go to the majors first and then finally go to another country as a last option. Plus allowing Indies until the very last to sign FAs mimics the last dibs of these type of leagues.

2. Doing this helps a lot but I still end up with a few hundred FAs more than I want (usually Americans since I have a college feeder) so after about a 1 week after my major league draft and allow the Indies a chance to sign players, I'll delete a few hundred low rated players to get my overall FA pool down to around 300 which seems to be the sweet spot for my universe. That allows me to have 1 week sim times of around 3 minutes which is what I want.
