What should I be doing day to day?
Hi All,
I'm looking for a few pointers if possible. I'm slowly getting to grips not only with OOTP but with the game of Baseball and I think that I'm starting to figure things out. Where I really struggle is figuring out exactly what I should be doing day to day. I play exclusively as a GM in the MLB quickstart. I know what to do in my first few days in office but what about after that? How often should I be checking the stat line of my players? How often should I go through my minor leagues? Should I be checking other organisations on a regular basis and scouting them or is it best to just concentrate on my own organisation? Do you guys have a set routine that you go through in the day to day management of your team? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

90% of the time you only "need" to do what interests you, because individual events are not important. You're actually going to make better decisions based on larger strings of data than small samples.
If your closer blows three saves in a row, that's a signal for sure - but it's not a signal for you, it's for the manager to handle. You want to look at it from the perspective of what the team needs as options and future assets and make sure you have bullpen help coming up through the ranks. But this shouldn't change anything really. You want to be developing the eventual replacement for everyone on your roster all the time anyway. In my opinion the 'daily functions' of a GM are to be looking at the ebb and flow of careers and clubs and to reassess your value of things. Seldom will you make quick adjustments, and they will be the result of lots of observation over a long time. |

Mostly agree with hammer.I would say one thing you should do on a regular basis is watch the waiver wire.

In an online league I do the following functional things beyond checking the standings/stats etc...:
1. Check for Injuries 2. Check my SP rotation/Bullpen/Lineups/Def Subs/PR - at all levels 3. Check for Demotion/Promotions then go back to 2. 4. Check Waiver wire 5. Check FA list 6. Check Coaches Available 7. Check my INT complex 8. Check my Player Contracts - Extensions 9. Check my Player Development Basically that type of routine. Once you are in rhythm it all comes natural... |

Tapered off on this practice myself quite a bit. Remember they're typically on waiver because they are out of options, so if you acquire them, find you really didn't plan well for a place for them, they just end up right back on the wire, unless you really want them and trade someone to open a slot.
