That's the biggest fault of errors and fielding percentage as defensive percentage. In order to get an error, you have to do something right - get close enough to the ball to actually be able to make a play on it. Only then you'll be judged to have failed to make a routine play. If you're too far away, the hitter gets a base hit. If you get close to a lot of balls and make a lot of errors in the process, you may look like a bad defender, but you're better than the guy who does not get even close to them. A lot of outs and some errors on the one side, a lot of base hits and no errors on the other.
