Hiring Personnel

I'm nearing the end of the regular season. As a GM I have several open spots in the minors. Should I fill those open spots now, or should I wait until the playoffs end and the offseason is going? My thinking was wait and there may be more people available due to new ones created for the lower ones. For the higher level openings such as the AAA Manager that retired, it might be best to later for those after some others retire or get fired and I have more to choose from that have experience.

I used to wait until the off season. Truthfully it was mostly because I hated the process of hiring all the coaches for the minors. Being able to delegate that to the asst. GM was the happiest day of my life.

I view it similar to looking for FA's of waiver wire.

Look now to get a jump and maybe pick up someone before others realize he's on the market. Look later when you know there will be more available so you can do some real comparison shopping.

Look now, Look later, Look again later than that. Look look look.

(Well, that's just me anyway)

Thank you. I looked. Nobody I would even want is available AND willing. I promoted a couple. Found others that refused the promotion. I had to look and in each case realized the ones that refused were heading to playoff teams if they took it and they were 66 years old and older. They are looking for more relaxation in their final years I think before retiring and possibly have no interest in signing another contract. So, I wait until the pool has more people in it.

definitely look early to get a jump, but unlike FA players not all coaches become available at the same time. that adds a different dynamic that you must account for.

i'd look after each minor league lets their coaches go for any diamonds in the rough. unfortunately waiting to see who gets released next week or month might cost you the ability to sign a better coach in hindsight.
