Stats Only Questions for Wolf and others

I have read the Annual Settings thread and am embarking on a new fictional stats only franchise as suggested by the Wolf. I have two questions for stats only players.

1. Do you use the overall or potential star ratings if using an AI evaluation that does not include ratings? It seems to me, that if you use a ratio of 0/67/22/11, the star system will only be based on statistics.

2. Does anyone have a good MLE calculator or rule of thumb they use when comparing minor league stats to major league stats?

i'd look at the slash line in Stats and AI for each minor league you have. (this likely requires good LTMs or auto-calc).

if your game world is using all the real minor league parks and teams, you should be able to use existing equivalency concepts from real life in tandem with the league slash lines from stats and AI in the game, i would assume.

otherwise, good luck with that endeavor... i'd just develop some rough estimates to go by. it's going to be incredibly volatile stats, just like real life, so it's far from confident predictions, just like real life.

No stars. Never stars. No overall ratings at all. The idea of stats-only is that you have to do a bit of in-depth research to determine player skill. The entire challenge is that nothing is available at a glance. Stars are the ultimate "at a glance" feature.

Exactly.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Think of it as a mystery game. You are the GM, and armed with only player stats and scouting reports (which should set on very low accuracy) you have to figure out who to play, promote, demote, trade, and cut.

Right. What they said. I think of stats-only as you have to play the roles of both scout and GM (and manager if you play out the games). That's the big difference.

Yes, just what was said by Wolf & company. No stars, no nothin. Uh oh, draft time. Do you take the college player who hit .300 against great talent, or do you take the HS player who hit .457 against average talent. Or do you ditch both, and take the SP that your scout wants you to take, who went 9-0 with a 1.95 ERA against good talent?

Stats only makes you pay so much more attention to a players progress in your farm system. How long do you ride that first round draft pick, who is hitting .245 at AA, and only hit .250 last season in AA? You can't rush through a season. I always sim at least five seasons, sometimes up to eight to build some history, and then take over an expansion team. The draft is a blast, and I "always" have the lowest payroll or nearly the lowest every season, just to see how far I can take a team on a low payroll. I've seen guys on this forum who "boast" that they have won four or five World Series in a row. Yea, they use stars, scouts on normal or higher, etc. Please! How challenging is that. Lazy man's way of doing it, but hey, to each his own!

Total truth, and well pointed out. Bravo!

way tougher game play with stats only. arguably more true to life, too. although, you do get feedback from scouts, but it's nowhere near the accuracy of "Normal" scouting accuracy in the game. a low scouting accuracy setting might be similar in difficulty and require that same extra attention to development process. i've yet to lower it in my leagues... i like winning nearly every year, though.
