I had this same thing happen to me. I signed a 27 year old OF to a 5 year $190mil contract only to have him decide to retire and pursue a Pro Golf career the week before Spring Training.

What sucked is I finally had my cheap owner give me enough a budget boost so I could sign one of the top players in baseball....then the next season he cut my budget and we were back in mediocrity again.
