Hidden injuries? Underperforming players
Is there a way to check if a player has a hidden injury or something? I have two players this season who have utterly crashed compared to their usual hitting abilities. Three months into the season, they usually hit 130 OPS+, but both are below 80. I understand sample sizes, etc. I checked their editor ratings out of curiosity, to see if their real skills had crashed, but nope, the sample year's stats were still great.
I am wondering if the game has a mechanic for minor injuries the player is hiding, or if there might be another reason? Or if there's something we as GMs/Managers can do? I sent both to the minors where they crushed it, so I brought them back up, but their mediocrity continued. How do you handle young, star-caliber, terribly-underperforming players? |

To quote the great Bruce Hornsby "that's just the way it is".
Without performance variance this game would suck! There are many things you can try to do...a few suggestions: - ensure their minor league stint is for a significant enough of a period of time to allow for any development to occur - was there any change to your coaching staff in the off-season? A change of coaching focus or a coach that prefers veterans? - I will often tinker with my batting order...finding the right slot for each player...I find some hitters perform great at the bottom of the lineup but when you 'expose' them at the top of the order they fall flat on their face None of these suggestions come with a money back guarantee! |

Yeah, I've been doing all that. The issue isn't development - I went into the editor to see and development is fine, and the hitter, while young, already had an MLB resume. Just odd. I realize it might be the dice just aren't rolling in my favor; I just thought there might also be a hidden OOTP mechanic someone else knew about.

You nailed it, there. The dice just aren't rolling in your favor.
It's terribly frustrating, and it sucks. But baseball is a cruel game. I feel your pain, by the way. The big money free agents I picked up in the offseason are fizzling. My pitching went from stellar to mediocre. My offense went from good to abysmal. Preseason predictions had my at 106 wins this year. I am 17-23.

I have a starting pitcher, 3rd in my rotation. He has great ratings. Last year his stats sucked, 5.30 ERA 6 wins 9 loses in 30 starts. I have his name show up when I try and negotiate a trade, a lot of teams want him. I'm 30 games in this season and he is a little better stats wise, but very unpredictable still. He's 25 and I don't want to let him go. I couldn't trade him because I'm sure he'll turn around "some day". He could be a #2 or maybe #1 on some teams.

Being overweightif isn't an injury in and of itself; however, it greatly increases the risk of muscle and joint problems.

Unless he decides to persue a promising career as an offensive lineman. Dude could be a brick wall there I'd recon. |

if they have the ratings, keep playing them regardless. -- law of independent results....
if you have delayed injuries on, deal with it as you normally do. |
